The family of the late veteran politician and businessman Njenga Karume is mourning the death of Henry Waireri Karume, one of their younger brothers.
Family members confirmed that Mr. Waireri passed away due to kidney failure. Relatives and friends have been gathering at the Runda home of his eldest sister, Dr. Wanjiku Kahiu, to offer their condolences.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Dr. Kahiu’s husband, Mr. James Kahiu, noted that Waireri had maintained a calm and steady demeanor in his final days.
He explained that Waireri had been undergoing regular dialysis treatments and was showing signs of gradual improvement, despite managing issues related to low blood pressure. Mr. Kahiu described him as an approachable, reserved individual who served as a trusted trustee of the Njenga Karume family estate.
A close long-time friend, Nahashon Muchina, shared fond memories of their friendship, which began when both were Form Two students at Lenana School. Muchina recalled how their bond endured well beyond their school years, often meeting through business ventures and major hotel functions. He remembered Waireri as a man of few words who was always quick to share a laugh.
The late Defense Minister and prominent tycoon Njenga Karume left behind a vast commercial empire spanning real estate, hospitality, transport, and agriculture. Following his passing in 2012, management of the family’s assets was entrusted to a board of trustees to oversee business operations and family welfare.
Beyond his familial connection , HenryWaireri served as an active trustee within the family organization, playing a role in managing estate matters and representing the broader family interests.
