Kiambu National Polytechnic (KINAP) has stepped up its environmental conservation efforts by launching a Mazingira Week initiative aimed at promoting tree planting, climate action and environmental stewardship among students and communities in Kiambu County.
The initiative, unveiled as part of activities to mark Mazingira Day, brings together the institution, county stakeholders and environmental organisations in an effort to make environmental conservation an integral part of training and community engagement.

KINAP Principal Sammy Waititu said the institution was taking a proactive approach to environmental protection by forging strategic partnerships with stakeholders to support reforestation and other climate related interventions.
The initiative seeks to move environmental conservation beyond occasional tree planting events by encouraging students to develop practical solutions to the environmental challenges facing their communities.
“At KINAP, environmental responsibility is not just an activity but part of our commitment to preparing responsible citizens and change agents,” the institution said.
The Mazingira Week programme is expected to provide students with opportunities to participate in tree planting, environmental awareness campaigns and community based conservation activities.
The institution, formerly known as Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), has also highlighted the role of its students in promoting sustainable development through innovation and practical skills.
The partnership approach brings together the Kiambu County Government, the Kenya Wildlife Conservation Society and other environmental stakeholders to strengthen conservation initiatives within the county.
The programme comes at a time when the country is intensifying efforts to increase forest cover, combat climate change and encourage communities to take greater responsibility for protecting the environment.
KINAP said its environmental campaign would also seek to instil a culture of conservation among students so that they can carry the message beyond the institution and into their communities.
The polytechnic’s Scouts movement is expected to play a key role in the initiative, with the institution describing scouting as an important leadership incubator for young people.
KINAP Scouts have been involved in institutional activities, peer mentorship, community engagement and ecological conservation, providing students with practical opportunities to develop leadership skills while serving society.
The institution said the Scouts are guided by the principles of the Scout Promise and Law, which emphasise discipline, teamwork, responsibility and service.
Through their participation in environmental activities, the Scouts are expected to help mobilise students and communities for tree planting and conservation programmes.
Their involvement also underscores KINAP’s broader strategy of linking technical and vocational education with community service and sustainable development.
Waititu said empowering young people to take an active role in environmental protection was critical because they would bear the greatest responsibility for dealing with the effects of climate change in the future.
The Mazingira Week campaign is therefore expected to combine environmental action with leadership development, giving students an opportunity to translate classroom knowledge into practical solutions.
KINAP’s environmental drive also seeks to strengthen collaboration between training institutions, government agencies and community organisations in addressing environmental degradation.
The institution said the initiative would continue to encourage innovation and responsible citizenship as part of its contribution to Kenya’s green transition.
As the country marks Mazingira Day, KINAP’s programme places students at the centre of the environmental conservation agenda, with the institution seeking to demonstrate that technical training institutions can play a significant role in climate action and community transformation.
The polytechnic has urged students, staff and members of the community to embrace environmental conservation as a shared responsibility and to support initiatives aimed at creating a cleaner and more sustainable future for Kiambu County and Kenya.
