Lari Member of Parliament Mburu Kahangara has vowed to support the national government officers in an extra way in the alcoholism war.
Kahangara said that it was shameful to see people abuse the alcoholic act, where bar operators open early in the morning and close their businesses late at night.
He decried that, the move has seen so many people getting drunk at the wrong hours of the day, when they are supposed to be working.
He was speaking at the Deputy County Commissioner’s offices in Kimende town, after holding a strategic meeting with the DCC, assistant county commissioner’s, chiefs, assistant chief’s as well as police commander’s.
The MP also decried that the Kiambu government led governor Kimani Wamatangi has licensed so many bars in the region.
“It is sad that the county government has licensed so many liquor outlets, encouraging people to drink and abuse alcohol” he said.
“Some have been operating before 6am, and goes on with their business even after 11pm. Others are licensed to operate as bar and restaurant but they do not have facilities to qualify for that class. They are left selling alcohol to any person without care” he noted.
Commissioner Kariuki Mbogo warned that they will enforce the 5pm to 11pm operating hours of the bars, so as to ensure that no drunkards are observed during the working hours of the day.
Mbogo also warned officers who will be found sabotaging the war on illicit brews and the alcohol outlets that contravenes with liquor laws will be dealt with accordingly.
“Once we get a tip off of any government officer or a police officer is conspiring with alcohol sellers who are breaking the law so that they continue misbehaving, will investigate them, how they respond to these operators, their mobile phone and how you relate to them” he revealed.
“Once we discover anything, from officer’s they will tell us if they are still fit for the job they have been employed to do” he warned.
The meeting comes at a time when Kimende town residents went on a protest urging the government to close some bars in the area over knowingly breaking the liquor laws.
Kahangara also noted that there has been rising cases of dairy cows theft in the area, especially from Kamburu, Nyanduma and Lari Kirenga wards.
The legislator urged farmers to embark on ensuring their cows are safe and that their animals sheds are strong.
“Some of our farmers have reared very expensive cows but they have built them animal sheds far away from their houses. Please make their sheds near your house, where you will listen at them at night. Once thieves come, you will hear them and raise an alarm at the correct time” Kahangara advised.
Mbogo urged the farmers to assist them in ensuring there is security in the area, by reporting suspicious movement at night and of people to the police, chiefs or assistant chiefs for instant action.
He said there was a time each week a cow worth over Sh 200,000 would be stolen.
“When a farmers loses two cows worth Sh 200,000 is so sad and discouraging. We want to work hand in hand with the society so that we prevent cows theft in this region” he said.
A nyumba kumi official Joseph Kinyi applauded Kahangara for supporting the administration to do the challenging work of alcoholism and animal theft in the area.
“Kahangara has demonstrated that he was ready to work with the administration for the betterment of our constituency. Fighting alcoholic is tough, it is just like dealing with animal thieves who visits people’s homes at night with sharp knives” Kinyi said.
