KANU Seeks to Revamp Itself Ahead of 2027 Polls

FORMER ruling party Kenya African National Union (KANU) is set to revamp itself ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the party’s Mt. Kenya regional chairman Njunge Mukirae the party will start by launching national mass recruitment drives of members.

He said the formerly popular and  vibrant party but whose fortunes and political might have significantly dwindled will then start a door to door campaign aimed at popularizing it across the country.

“Charity begins at home and hence we shall start our party’s revamping exercise in Mt.Kenya region. We want the party to reclaim it’s lost glory and attract the youthful generation which is the vast majority in the voting bracket”, he said.

The chairman said that the recruitment drive will be easy owing to the fact that Kanu has leadership structures across the country and urged politicians expecting to contest during the 2027 polls to consider vying via the Kanu ticket.

“Our party is the only one in the country with structures in every corner of the country and has remained steadfast in the face of volatile political dynamics,” he said.

Speaking to the media in Kiamhu town on Tuesday, April 28, 2025, the chairman also raised the alarm over the irregular sale of party assets by unscrupulous party officials.

Mukirae who doubles as the Kiambu County Kanu vice-chairman claimed that some greedy office holders are colluding with cartels to sell off party houses and plots.

He revealed that  according to a recent financial statement filed with the Registrar of Political parties, the party is worth approximately Kes.6 billion.

The party boss appealed to county governments across the country as well as regional commissioners not to sanction any transfer of Kanu properties without the consent of the party chairman Gideon Moi.

“All party transactions, party affairs, and businesses must be authorized by the party National Chairman Gideon Moi and respective bonafide elected leaders in every region,” said the chairman.

He said it should dawn on those unlawfully disposing of party properties that the same have inventories and hence easily traceable and advised those who might have been duped into buying such properties to demand reimbursement of their cash.

“We will soon embark on reclaiming grabbed party properties particularly offices and then rehabilitate them by painting them,” he said.

Critics argue that the some party officials are capitalizing in its waning popularity and influence to offload it’s assets before it becomes obsolete.
