The Githunguri Water and Sanitation Company Ltd (GIWASCO) has reaffirmed its commitment to stronger governance, financial sustainability and improved water and sanitation services following the conclusion of a four-day Board Strategic Governance and Institutional Review Workshop.
The workshop brought together the company’s Board of Directors and management for an extensive review of GIWASCO’s strategic direction, institutional performance and governance systems as it seeks to strengthen its operations and better respond to the needs of communities it serves.
The engagement provided an opportunity for the Board and management to take stock of the company’s current position, assess emerging challenges and chart a clear path towards achieving its long-term objectives.

A key focus of the deliberations was GIWASCO’s strategic priorities through 2031, with the Board providing governance-level direction on measures aimed at enhancing institutional effectiveness, operational efficiency, financial resilience and accountability.
The discussions come at a time when water service providers are under increasing pressure to deliver reliable and affordable services while maintaining financially sustainable operations and responding to growing demand.
The Board also examined the company’s institutional framework and performance, placing emphasis on strengthening systems that can support efficient service delivery and ensure that strategic decisions translate into measurable results.
Another major area of focus was the review of key company policies.
The Board provided guidance on the need to keep GIWASCO’s policy framework responsive to changing circumstances and aligned with its strategic ambitions. The policies are also expected to support preparations for the proposed IFDK-funded Thika and Githunguri Water and Sanitation Improvement Project.

The proposed project is expected to complement broader efforts to strengthen water and sanitation infrastructure and improve the company’s capacity to serve residents in its area of operation.
Unlike routine planning engagements, the workshop was structured around decision-making and implementation, with participants seeking to strengthen the connection between Board oversight, management responsibility, institutional discipline and actual performance.
The approach is intended to ensure that strategic plans do not remain on paper but are translated into practical programmes capable of delivering improvements in operations and customer service.
The Board and management concluded the workshop with a shared commitment to implement the decisions and strategic direction arising from the discussions.
The company said the focus going forward would be on turning the agreed priorities into tangible improvements in performance and the quality, reliability and sustainability of services provided to the communities.
The outcome of the workshop is expected to provide a stronger governance and institutional foundation as GIWASCO pursues its strategic ambitions towards 2031.
The company’s leadership maintained that sustainable growth in the water sector requires clear strategic direction, accountable leadership, sound institutional systems and consistent attention to customers.
The review therefore marks an important step in positioning GIWASCO for the next phase of its development, with the Board expected to maintain oversight while management drives implementation of the agreed priorities.
“A stronger GIWASCO requires clarity of direction, institutional discipline, accountable governance and a shared commitment to better service delivery,” the company said.
With the strategic review now concluded, attention shifts to implementation as GIWASCO seeks to convert its governance decisions into measurable outcomes for the communities that depend on its water and sanitation services.
