Boda boda operators in Ndumberi Ward, Kiambu Sub-County, have unveiled new security measures aimed at curbing the use of motorcycles to transport illicit goods and illegal dumping.
The measures were agreed upon during a three-hour consultative meeting involving boda boda operators, security agencies and sector leaders.
The meeting, convened by Kiambu Assistant County Commissioner Caleb Nyongesa, brought together boda boda operators from Ndumberi, the Officer Commanding Station Ndumberi and elected leaders from the sector.
Residents have raised concerns over the alleged use of boda bodas to transport bhang and illicit brews, as well as cases of phone snatching and illegal dumping of used diapers.
To address the concerns, Boda Boda operators say they have introduced a QR code system for their members.
The QR code will contain details of registered operators, enabling customers to identify and trace a rider after boarding.
The operators have been given three months to ensure all members have QR codes, identification cards and marked reflectors.
They will also maintain a register of riders operating at night as part of efforts to enhance security after dark.
VO:Assistant County Commissioner Caleb Nyongesa said the three-month compliance period will allow authorities to establish a database of registered boda boda operators and make it easier to identify criminals operating within the sector.
He also warned against the dumping of used diapers in drainage systems, saying the practice could worsen flooding during heavy rains. Nyongesa warned that stern action will be taken against operators who fail to comply with the agreed measures or break the law.He said the sensitization programme will be rolled out across all wards in Kiambu County as authorities seek to restore order and improve security within the boda boda sector.
