Kenya’s growing reputation as a technology powerhouse received a major boost after four university students secured the top award at the Huawei ICT Competition 2025–2026 Global Finals in Shenzhen, China, becoming the first Kenyan team to claim the competition’s Grand Prize in its ten-year history.

The achievement has been celebrated as a landmark moment for the country’s digital transformation agenda and a testament to the quality of ICT training being offered in Kenyan institutions of higher learning.

Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, William Kabogo, congratulated the students for raising Kenya’s profile on the global technology stage through their outstanding performance against competitors from around the world.

Kabogo recalled meeting and recognizing the team during the Connected Africa Summit 2026 before they departed for China, expressing pride in their remarkable accomplishment upon returning home with the competition’s highest accolade.

The victorious team comprised Kevin Tuei of Tharaka University, Catherine Atieno of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Brian Ngugi Kamau of Mount Kenya University, and Salem Kim of Machakos University.

According to the Cabinet Secretary, the students demonstrated exceptional technical competence, innovation, collaboration, and resilience throughout the global contest, outperforming teams from numerous countries.

Their success is being viewed as evidence of Kenya’s expanding digital ecosystem and the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to equip young people with future-ready technological skills.

Kabogo noted that the achievement validates the government’s commitment to investing in digital literacy, innovation, and technology education as key drivers of economic growth and youth empowerment.

He further praised the universities, trainers, mentors, and industry partners who played a role in preparing the students for international competition, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in nurturing world-class talent.

The Huawei ICT Competition is regarded as one of the world’s leading technology contests for university students, providing participants with an opportunity to showcase expertise in areas such as networking, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital innovation.

Technology stakeholders believe the victory will inspire more Kenyan students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), while strengthening the country’s standing as a regional leader in innovation and digital development.

The triumph also aligns with the government’s Digital Superhighway programme, which seeks to expand digital infrastructure, increase connectivity, and create employment opportunities through technology-driven growth.

As celebrations continue, the achievement is being hailed as a significant milestone for Kenya’s ICT sector and a powerful demonstration that Kenyan youth possess the talent and capability to compete successfully at the highest international level.

For many observers, Team Kenya’s victory is not only a proud national moment but also a glimpse into the country’s promising future as a hub for technological excellence and innovation in Africa.
