People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has reaffirmed that the opposition remains steadfast in its resolve to field a single presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking in Cianda, Kiambu County, during the burial of the late Henry Waireri Karume—son of veteran politician the late Njenga Karume—Karua emphasized that unity remains central to their ongoing deliberations.
She stated that at the appropriate time, the coalition will announce its preferred candidate to challenge President William Ruto.
Karua dismissed claims that the opposition would fragment before the election, calling those predicting a split “daydreamers waiting in vain.” Reflecting on her shared history with the late Njenga Karume in championing Kenya’s democratic space, she vowed that the opposition will not allow anyone to roll back the country’s democratic gains.
Joining her at the service, Kiambu Governor Dr. Kimani Wamatangi urged the opposition to maintain a strong unity of purpose in their bid for the presidency.
He noted that a formidable, united front is essential to building voter confidence and avoiding the strategic missteps of the 2022 election.
Governor Wamatangi also highlighted his administration’s development record, pointing to the completion of 575 ECDE centers, the establishment of over 56 new Level 3 and 4 health facilities, and the installation of thousands of solar streetlights to cut energy costs.
Confirming his intent to seek re-election in 2027, Wamatangi stressed that his current priority remains fulfilling his campaign promises, leaving citizens to judge his government based on its track record.
