Opposition Warned Against Divisions as Pressure Mounts for One 2027 Presidential Candidate

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Kiambu coordinator Patrick Wainaina has urged opposition leaders to put aside personal ambitions and unite behind a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

Wainaina, popularly known as Wajungle, said Kenyans were increasingly looking to the opposition to demonstrate political maturity by forging a common front capable of mounting a serious challenge to the Kenya Kwanza administration.

He warned that internal rivalries, competing presidential ambitions and disagreements over political strategy could weaken the opposition’s chances if leaders failed to reach a consensus before the next election.

The former Thika Town MP said the electorate was waiting for a clear signal that opposition leaders had agreed on a common candidate, describing the anticipated breakthrough as the emergence of “white smoke” from ongoing political negotiations.

“Kenyans are eagerly waiting for the white smoke to come out, signalling that the opposition has settled on one candidate to take President William Ruto home. Anyone who betrays the people will face the wrath of Kenyans,” Wainaina said.

He spoke in Thika during a meet the people tour led by DCP aspirants seeking various elective positions in Kiambu County, as political formations begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Wainaina said the opposition’s strength would depend not only on its ability to criticise the government but also on whether its leaders could agree on a shared political programme and rally behind one candidate.

He urged the opposition to place the interests and expectations of voters above individual political calculations, warning that failure to honour commitments to a united front could erode public confidence.

The DCP coordinator maintained that leaders seeking political change must demonstrate unity through action rather than statements, arguing that prolonged divisions would undermine the electorate’s desire for an alternative to the current administration.

His remarks come as political leaders and parties continue to explore possible alliances and negotiations ahead of the 2027 presidential contest, in which opposition unity is expected to be a central issue.

The opposition unity appeal comes as Wainaina recalibrates his own political ambitions, abandoning his bid for the Kiambu governorship to pursue a return to Parliament as Thika MP.

The move marks a strategic shift by the former legislator, who previously represented Thika Town in the National Assembly and is now seeking to reclaim the seat.

Wainaina’s decision places him in a competitive race for the DCP ticket, with five other aspirants also seeking the party’s nomination for the Thika parliamentary seat.

Addressing the aspirants, he assured them that the party would conduct free, fair and transparent nominations, saying the process would give all contenders an equal opportunity to compete for the ticket.

He urged the candidates to maintain discipline and respect the outcome of the nominations, warning against allowing competition for the party’s endorsement to degenerate into internal divisions.

Wainaina said credible nominations would be essential to building a strong party, retaining the confidence of supporters and preparing candidates for the general election.

He maintained that the party’s electoral prospects would depend partly on its ability to manage internal competition fairly and present candidates with the backing of party members and grassroots supporters.

The assurance is significant in a contest where several aspirants are competing for the same ticket, with the nomination outcome likely to shape the party’s campaign strategy in Thika.

During the tour, local leaders Ephantus Mwangi and Mary Waringa said Kenyans were dissatisfied with the state of governance and wanted political leaders to prioritise policies that would improve their livelihoods.

They called for a government that responds to the needs of ordinary citizens, saying economic and social transformation should remain at the centre of political campaigns.

The leaders’ remarks reflected the message being advanced by DCP aspirants as they engage residents and seek to strengthen the party’s grassroots presence in Kiambu County.

The meet the people tour provided the aspirants with an opportunity to interact with residents, explain their political ambitions and popularise the party ahead of the next electoral cycle.

With the 2027 General Election approaching, political parties and prospective candidates are expected to intensify grassroots mobilisation as they seek to consolidate support, negotiate alliances and position themselves for competitive nomination contests.

For Wainaina, the immediate challenge is twofold: helping DCP strengthen its political presence in Kiambu while pursuing his own return to Parliament.

His appeal for opposition unity also underscores a wider question facing the political class ahead of the election that whether competing leaders can reconcile their ambitions and agree on a common presidential candidate capable of mounting a united challenge to President Ruto.
