United Alternative Government (UAG) principals have signed a unity pact committing themselves to remain together and support a single presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election, in a move aimed at ending speculation over possible divisions within the opposition alliance.
The leaders, who met at Windsor Hotel in Kiambu County on Monday, signed a Personal Unity Pledge and a Coalition Unity Agreement, binding themselves to a common process of identifying their presidential flag bearer.
Under the agreement, the principals will participate in a joint and credible selection process and undertake to support and campaign for whoever emerges as the coalition’s candidate, regardless of the individual leader chosen.
The pact marks a significant step in the opposition’s efforts to build a united front against President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration ahead of the August 2027 elections.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the principals said they had made the commitment after extensive and candid consultations, arguing that the coalition’s unity must take precedence over individual political ambitions.
“We, the Principals of the United Alternative Government, meeting at Windsor Hotel in Kiambu County, have today taken a decisive step towards consolidating our unity and presenting the people of Kenya with a credible, democratic and transformative alternative government,” they said.
The agreement seeks to address one of the most closely watched questions in the opposition camp — whether its leading figures will ultimately rally behind one presidential candidate.
The coalition has previously maintained that it intends to field a single candidate, although differences over the timing, criteria and mechanism for selecting the flag bearer have generated intense political debate.
In July, UAG co-convenor Martha Karua said no decision had been made on the coalition’s presidential candidate, stressing that the choice would have to follow an agreed consultative framework after the alliance finalised its governance structures.
The latest undertaking now places the principals under a formal political commitment to respect the eventual outcome of that process.
The leaders said their decision was informed by the growing demand among Kenyans for an alternative political arrangement capable of transcending individual parties and personalities.
They argued that voters were increasingly looking beyond political labels and individual ambitions and instead demanding a credible team capable of providing alternative national leadership.
“Millions of Kenyans are looking beyond individual leaders and political parties. They are asking whether those seeking to provide alternative leadership have the courage to put aside personal ambitions, historical differences and partisan considerations in defence of the greater national interest,” the statement said.
“Our answer today is unequivocal: Kenya comes first.”
The pact comes at a critical stage of preparations for the 2027 elections, with political parties and coalitions stepping up mobilisation and positioning for the contest.
The UAG brings together prominent opposition figures, including Wiper Patriotic Front leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, Democracy for the Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua, former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa and former Justice Minister Martha Karua. The coalition has publicly maintained that its principals will work together to challenge the Kenya Kwanza administration.
The leaders have in recent months intensified joint public engagements while individual principals have also continued to build their political bases.
That dual strategy has fuelled speculation about whether personal presidential ambitions could eventually undermine the alliance.
The unity agreement is therefore likely to be tested as the coalition moves from broad political mobilisation to the more difficult question of settling on one candidate.
The principals said they were aware of the challenge and had chosen to place the national interest above personal considerations.
They pledged individually and collectively to remain united, participate in a credible candidate-selection process and fully support the person selected to carry the coalition’s mandate into the 2027 election.
The UAG has increasingly sought to portray itself not merely as an opposition alliance but as a government-in-waiting, promising Kenyans an alternative approach to governance, economic management and constitutional leadership.
In June, Mr Musyoka, who is one of the coalition’s principals, described the alliance as a vehicle for an alternative government and criticised the Kenya Kwanza administration over issues including the cost of living, taxation and governance.
The coalition has also unveiled alternative policy proposals, including a “People’s Budget”, as part of its effort to demonstrate that it can offer a different governing programme rather than simply campaign against the incumbent administration.
Monday’s agreement is expected to give the opposition’s unity campaign fresh momentum as the country moves deeper into the election cycle.
The principals said their objective was to build a coalition anchored on democratic principles, consultation and national interests rather than individual political ambitions.
They said Kenya’s future should not be determined by partisan calculations and called for a political culture in which leaders are prepared to subordinate personal interests to the interests of the country.
The agreement also comes as political temperatures rise ahead of the 2027 election, with the opposition increasingly seeking to consolidate its support across regions and political constituencies.
The leaders’ ability to honour the pact when the presidential selection process begins will be a major test of whether the UAG can translate its current unity into an effective national electoral machine.
For now, the principals have sought to send a clear message to supporters and potential voters: whoever wins the coalition’s presidential nomination will receive the backing of the entire alliance.
The success of that pledge, however, will depend on whether the principals can maintain cohesion when the contest shifts from collective opposition to the highly personal battle for the presidential ticket.
For the coalition, Monday’s signing was therefore more than a ceremonial declaration of unity. It was an attempt to establish political discipline ahead of the defining decision of the 2027 presidential race — choosing one candidate and persuading every other contender to stand behind him or her.
The principals declared that the ultimate measure of their alliance would be their willingness to place the country above self.
