Political heat is expected to intensify in the coming months as the contest for the Kiambu gubernatorial seat, currently held by Dr. Kimani Wamatangi, draws near. The fever pitch is already being felt on the ground, with various leaders allied to different political camps trading barbs without fear.
Among those who have declared their interest in unseating Wamatangi are Thika Town MP Alice Wambui Ng’ang’a and Finsco Africa CEO Mr. John Mwaura Kogi, who has announced his bid on a Democratic Congress Party (DCP) ticket.
In a dramatic turn of events, former Kiambu Town MCA and former Majority Leader Anthony Ikonya threw a spanner into the works by claiming that the DCP candidate, Mr. Kogi, hails from Murang’a County. Ikonya further alleged that Kogi was officially involved in sponsoring the gangs that breached Governor Wamatangi’s office during the recent fuel protests.
Speaking on Kameme FM’s popular Wednesday morning political show, Mbaratha, Ikonya sensationally claimed that Kogi is a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) mole planted to destabilize the DCP.
“I can tell you without an iota of doubt that Kogi is not serious about contesting for the Governor’s seat on a DCP ticket. These are some of the people I told you before that UDA is planting to destabilize and divide elections in Kiambu County,” Ikonya stated.
He further alleged that the rowdy youths were merely hired to destabilize and heckle Wamatangi’s administration. He questioned their motives, arguing that if the protestors were genuine, they would have focused strictly on the high cost of fuel rather than introducing political sideshows while ordinary Kenyans continue to suffer.
Mr. Ikonya’s assertions highlight just how competitive the upcoming election will be, signaling a fierce, head-on battle for the county’s top job.
Efforts by the Kiambu Observer to get a comment from Mr. Kogi regarding these heavy allegations were futile, as phone calls and text messages went unanswered.
Nevertheless, political pundits point out that the Kiambu gubernatorial race will be tight, with no walkovers expected as each camp pulls strings to tilt the scales in their favor.
