DCP Reshuffles Kiambu Youth Leadership as Party Targets Gen Z

The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) has effected changes to its youth leadership structure in Kiambu County, appointing Peter Njoroge Mwaura as the interim county youth leader in a move that puts greater focus on mobilising and engaging young people ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Mr Mwaura takes over from Isaac Mungai, who the party says has ceased to serve as its Kiambu County youth leader with immediate effect.

The change was communicated through a circular dated September 29, 2026, and signed by DCP Kiambu County Coordinator Sovinga Wa Bibiana.

The circular directed all party members, youth structures and stakeholders in the county to support Mr Mwaura as he assumes responsibility for coordinating the party’s youth wing during the interim period.

The leadership changes come as political parties intensify efforts to establish grassroots structures and connect with younger voters, particularly members of Generation Z, ahead of the 2027 elections.

Mr Mwaura’s appointment was followed by a courtesy call to Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thangwa, where discussions centred on youth mobilisation and empowerment.

Senator Thangwa said he had met the newly appointed DCP youth leader and discussed strategies for mobilising and empowering young people in Kiambu, with particular attention to Gen Z.

“We discussed strategies to mobilize and empower Kiambu’s youth, especially Gen Z, around DCP’s core principles and their aspirations for the future,” Senator Thangwa said.

He congratulated Mr Mwaura on his appointment and welcomed his new responsibilities within the party’s county structure.

Mr Mwaura was accompanied during the visit by Kiambu leaders Hon. Karichu and Mr Theuri.

The engagement signals an attempt by DCP to deepen its interaction with young people at the grassroots as parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 political contest.

DCP describes itself as a citizen centred political party whose stated principles include justice, unity, accountability, citizen participation and inclusive development. The party’s official platform also identifies youth, women and persons with disabilities among groups it says should be central to national development.

The party has in recent weeks stepped up efforts to strengthen its structures ahead of the 2027 elections. On September 29, DCP held a joint National Executive Committee and Central Committee meeting in Nairobi to discuss party priorities and organisational preparations for the next election.

The changes in Kiambu therefore come at a time when DCP is seeking to consolidate its grassroots presence while building structures capable of sustaining political activity beyond individual campaigns.

The party has also been active in political mobilisation in Kiambu, with recent engagements involving senior DCP officials and local leaders. A planned DCP grassroots mobilisation programme in the county has been described as part of the party’s wider efforts to strengthen its networks and interact directly with residents.

For Mr Mwaura, the immediate task will be to organise and coordinate the party’s youth structures across the county while developing avenues for young people to participate in party activities and political discussions.

The circular, however, did not give reasons for the replacement of Mr Mungai, nor did it specify how long Mr Mwaura would serve in the interim position.

It instead called on party members and stakeholders to accord the new youth leader “full support and cooperation” as he takes charge of the county youth wing.

The leadership transition places the youth question at the centre of DCP’s county level organisation at a time when young voters are expected to remain an important constituency in the 2027 political debate.

Beyond mobilisation, the party’s stated national priorities include employment, entrepreneurship, technology, education and inclusive development, areas likely to feature prominently in its engagement with young people.

Senator Thangwa’s meeting with the new DCP youth leader also adds a notable political dimension to the development. Parliament’s current profile identifies Mr Thangwa as the elected Senator for Kiambu and lists his party as UDA.

The meeting, however, was presented as an engagement on youth mobilisation and empowerment rather than a formal announcement of any change in party affiliation.

With the 2027 election cycle drawing closer, the changes in Kiambu underscore the growing importance parties are placing on county level organisation, youth participation and direct engagement with emerging generations of voters.

For DCP, the success of the new youth structure will depend on how effectively it translates its national principles into grassroots programmes and gives young people meaningful avenues to participate in political and civic affairs.

The appointment of Mr Mwaura consequently marks the beginning of a new phase for the party’s youth wing in Kiambu, with the interim leader expected to coordinate its activities and help build a stronger connection between the party and the county’s youthful population.
