Cleophas Malala Emphasizes Strategic Importance of Regional Voting Blocs for 2027 Election

Cleophas Malala, a senior figure in the Democracy for Citizens Party, has proposed a political alliance between the Mount Kenya and Mulembe regions to secure a decisive victory in the 2027 presidential election.

Malala argued that political success in Kenya depends strictly on securing the support of these two populous voting blocs. He claimed that no candidate could ascend to the presidency without collaborating with the people of Mount Kenya, citing their registered voter base of 8.2 million.

Regional statistics presented by the former Kakamega senator highlighted the concentration of power in specific areas. After the Mount Kenya region, he noted that the Western region follows with 2.9 million votes, the Rift Valley with 2.7 million, Nyanza with 2.5 million, and Ukambani with 2.3 million.

He contended that even if all other major regions unified, they would still fall short of the figures held by the Mount Kenya region alone. Malala emphasized that the constitutional requirement of 50 percent plus one is effectively reachable through a combination of the Mount Kenya and Mulembe voting blocks.

To formalize this strategy, the politician announced the formation of a movement called MM, representing the Mulima and Mulembe communities. He said he intends to continue pushing this agenda to ensure these two groups unify their voting power for the upcoming election.

Malala claimed that a partnership between these regions would result in more than 70 percent of the total vote. He said that once these groups unite, the election will effectively be decided before the rest of the country casts their ballots.

The former senator also linked this political mobilization to his support for a ticket featuring former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Senator Edwin Sifuna. He suggested that President William Ruto is actively attempting to prevent Sifuna from securing a political vehicle for the 2027 polls to avoid this coalition.

Recent developments in the political landscape have seen a shift in his role within the Democracy for Citizens Party. While earlier reports identified him as the deputy party leader, recent internal moves within the party leadership have impacted his status as the party undergoes structural changes.

Independent electoral projections suggest that voter enrollment remains a key area of focus for authorities as the 2027 General Election approaches. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission continues to conduct voter registration exercises to update the national register ahead of the vote.

National voter participation has seen a steady decline in recent election cycles. Analysts have noted that turnout patterns for 2027 will likely depend on candidate selection and the effectiveness of regional mobilization efforts.
