For years, families in Kirigiti and neighboring areas within Kiambu Town Constituency faced a major obstacle in accessing basic primary education. Lacking a local public school, young pupils were forced to commute daily to distant institutions such as Riabai and Kiu River Primary Schools.
This daily journey was not only a financial burden on low-income parents who struggled with transport fares, but it also posed severe safety hazards. Children had to navigate busy, dangerous roads where speeding vehicles frequently caused tragic accidents. Recognizing this critical gap, Kiambu Town Member of Parliament, Waithaka Machua, prioritized local education infrastructure by spearheading a initiative to build a dedicated public primary school for the Kirigiti community.
Excitement and relief swept through Kirigiti and its surrounding neighborhoods on Wednesday as residents and parents gathered to celebrate the official groundbreaking of the new Kirigiti Primary School—a flagship education project initiated by Kiambu Town MP, Hon. Waithaka Machua.
The modern educational facility will be constructed on a two-acre parcel of land adjacent to the Kirigiti Rehabilitation Centre, with construction expected to reach full completion within six months.
Speaking during the launch ceremony, Hon. Machua reflected on the relentless efforts required to secure the land for public utility. He emphasized that the milestone was made possible through robust public participation and a strong partnership with the local community.
“We initiated this project shortly after I assumed office. We made it a point to fully engage the people of Kirigiti, who have endured years of struggle taking their children to distant schools,” Machua stated.
The MP highlighted the pressing safety concerns that fueled the project’s urgency, noting that students previously had to walk long distances to Riabai or Kiu River. Tragically, these journeys across busy roads resulted in accidents and the loss of young lives due to speeding vehicles.
Machua further explained that through seamless coordination with the Boma Yetu initiative, a comprehensive development plan has been designed to ensure the school is fully equipped with modern amenities and essential learning infrastructure.
Elated parents expressed deep gratitude to the MP, noting that the school will relieve them of heavy transport expenses and ensure their children learn in a safe, accessible environment.
“I want to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to our MP for making our lives so much easier. This new school is an answer to our prayers, and we pray that God continues to guide him,” remarked Jane Wanjiru, a local parent.
