Kiambu MP Race Gains Momentum as Riabai MCA Hezron Gachui Declares Bid

The race for the Kiambu Constituency parliamentary seat is beginning to gather momentum, with more leaders expressing interest in succeeding the current leadership ahead of the next General Election.

The latest entrant is Riabai Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Hezron Gachui, who has officially declared his intention to vie for the Kiambu parliamentary seat. The constituency, which hosts the Kiambu County headquarters, is expected to witness one of the county’s most closely contested political races.

Gachui says his decision is informed by what he describes as a decade of proven leadership in Riabai Ward, where he has served for two consecutive terms. He argues that his development record and close engagement with residents have prepared him to take on a bigger leadership role at the national level.

Speaking during an interview, the MCA said Kiambu Constituency requires a new style of leadership focused on tangible results, accountability and people-centred development.

He noted that while significant investments have been made in education infrastructure over the years, insufficient attention has been given to improving learning outcomes and empowering learners academically.

“We have concentrated on building classrooms and other physical infrastructure, but we must now invest in improving academic performance and equipping our students with the skills they need to succeed,” he said.

Security is another area Gachui pledged to prioritise if elected. He said several villages within the constituency continue to experience inadequate security coverage due to the absence of police posts and related facilities.

He cited that the interior areas within the subcounty, require enhanced security infrastructure alongside improved street lighting to boost public safety.

On infrastructure development, Gachui expressed concern over what he termed the slow pace of road construction in Kiambu Constituency compared to neighbouring constituencies.

He claimed that while constituencies such as Kiambaa and Kikuyu have recorded significant progress in road expansion, Kiambu has lagged behind, leaving many roads in poor condition.

“I have the experience and understanding of the needs of our people. I believe I can represent Kiambu effectively in Parliament and push for equitable development,” he said.

Addressing the question of political party affiliation, Gachui argued that voters should place greater emphasis on a candidate’s integrity, leadership record and commitment to public service rather than party popularity.

According to him, previous elections have shown that winning on a popular party ticket does not automatically translate into effective leadership.

“People should examine the character, track record and leadership qualities of those seeking office instead of being carried away by political excitement or party euphoria,” he said.

The MCA also outlined what he believes are the key concerns raised by residents during his consultations across the constituency.

He said many residents are demanding stronger representation in Parliament, better oversight of public resources and reforms in land administration, particularly on issues affecting freehold land ownership.

Gachui criticised what he termed excessive taxation and called for Members of Parliament to play a more active oversight role over the Executive, arguing that legislators should protect citizens from policies that increase the cost of living without corresponding public benefits.

He maintained that elected leaders should vote on legislation based on the interests of the people they represent rather than political pressure or personal considerations.

“As leaders, our responsibility is to protect wananchi and ensure every decision made in Parliament benefits the people. Kiambu deserves leadership that is accountable, courageous and committed to serving the public,” he said.

With political activity gradually intensifying, Gachui’s declaration adds a new dimension to the contest for the Kiambu parliamentary seat, setting the stage for what is expected to be a competitive campaign as aspirants begin presenting their development agendas to voters.
