More than 90 young people in Ruiru Constituency are undergoing professional driving training under a youth empowerment programme spearheaded by Kiambu Woman Representative Anne Wamuratha, in a move aimed at improving employability and promoting self-reliance.
The trainees, enrolled at Petanns Driving School in Ruiru, are currently sitting their theory examinations ahead of their final practical driving tests scheduled for next week. Successful candidates are expected to qualify for driving licences, opening doors to employment in the transport and logistics sectors.
Ms Wamuratha said the initiative is part of a broader countywide skills development programme targeting unemployed youth with market-driven vocational training.
Beyond driving, the programme offers short courses in catering, hairdressing, beauty and cosmetology, equipping participants with practical skills to start businesses or secure jobs in the growing service industry.
“Our goal is to empower young people with hands-on skills that translate into real economic opportunities and sustainable livelihoods,” she said.
The Woman Representative noted that the programme is already being rolled out to other constituencies across Kiambu County, with more youth expected to benefit in the coming months.
The initiative comes amid increasing calls for investment in technical and vocational training as a strategy for tackling youth unemployment, with leaders shifting focus towards skills that can generate immediate income and support entrepreneurship.
Residents and beneficiaries have welcomed the programme, saying it provides a practical pathway for young people to earn a living and become financially independent.
