Kiambu County has marked a significant milestone in the transformation of its healthcare sector after successfully conducting its first telemedicine-assisted surgery at Kiambu Level Five Hospital using the advanced Proximie digital surgery platform.

Governor Kimani Wamatangi witnessed the groundbreaking procedure, a live caesarean section, from the county headquarters, demonstrating the growing role of technology in enhancing healthcare delivery and medical training across the county. The surgery was also observed in real time by medical teams at Thika Level Five Hospital as well as specialists based in the United Kingdom, highlighting the platform’s capacity to connect healthcare professionals across geographical boundaries.

The Proximie system digitizes surgical procedures through the installation of high-quality cameras and a sophisticated digital platform that enables surgeons and medical experts to collaborate remotely. Through the technology, specialists can provide guidance, training, consultation, and oversight during operations regardless of their physical location.

Speaking after witnessing the procedure, Governor Wamatangi described the achievement as a major breakthrough for Kiambu County’s healthcare system and a demonstration of the county government’s commitment to embracing innovation in service delivery.

The telemedicine platform is expected to enhance knowledge sharing among healthcare professionals by enabling doctors and surgeons from different hospitals, counties, and even countries to observe, learn from, and evaluate surgical procedures in real time. This collaborative approach is anticipated to improve medical outcomes, strengthen professional development, and increase access to specialized expertise within county health facilities.

Health experts note that digital surgical technology such as Proximie has the potential to bridge gaps in healthcare by connecting local medical practitioners with leading specialists around the world. The system also supports quality assurance through peer review and auditing of procedures, helping healthcare institutions maintain high standards of patient care.

The successful telemedicine surgery comes amid ongoing investments and reforms in Kiambu County’s health sector aimed at modernizing medical infrastructure, improving healthcare services, and expanding access to specialized treatment for residents.

County officials hailed the initiative as a clear indication of the progress being made in integrating technology into healthcare delivery, positioning Kiambu among the leading counties embracing digital health innovations in Kenya.

The milestone is expected to pave the way for wider adoption of telemedicine and digital surgery solutions across the county’s healthcare facilities, ultimately improving patient outcomes and strengthening the capacity of medical professionals through global collaboration.

Governor Wamatangi reiterated the county government’s commitment to continuing investments in modern healthcare technologies as part of its broader agenda to enhance the quality and accessibility of medical services for all residents.

The successful live caesarean section marks the beginning of a new era in healthcare delivery in Kiambu, where technology is increasingly becoming a critical tool in advancing medical excellence and improving patient care.
