Anne Wamuratha Calls for People Centred Leadership, Economic Empowerment

Kiambu Woman Representative Anne Wamuratha has called for leadership that prioritises economic empowerment, education and equal opportunities, saying sustainable development must translate into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary citizens.

Wamuratha said empowerment should go beyond political rhetoric to include practical interventions that enable individuals, families and community groups to improve their livelihoods and become economically independent.

The legislator made the remarks during the Igwamiti Welfare Groups Empowerment event held in Karuga, Laikipia West, where she joined leaders and community members in championing education, economic empowerment and equity.

She said effective leadership should be measured by its ability to identify people’s needs, create opportunities and deliver solutions that address the challenges facing communities.

“Empowerment is about leadership that delivers, creates opportunities and transforms lives,” Wamuratha said, underscoring the importance of initiatives that place citizens at the centre of development.

The event was hosted by Laikipia West MP Stephen Wachira Karani and Laikipia Woman Representative Jane Wangechi Kagiri, with Kirinyaga Governor Anne Mumbi Waiguru attending as the chief guest.

Wamuratha’s participation highlighted the importance of collaboration among elected leaders in advancing community based development programmes and strengthening initiatives aimed at improving household welfare.

She emphasised that education, economic empowerment and equity remain critical pillars in creating opportunities for people to overcome economic challenges and participate more meaningfully in development.

Education, she noted, provides a foundation for individuals to acquire knowledge and skills, while economic empowerment creates pathways for families and community groups to build financial stability and improve their standards of living.

Equity, meanwhile, remains essential in ensuring that development opportunities reach different sections of society, including those who may otherwise be excluded from mainstream economic progress.

The legislator said communities deserved leaders who were accessible, responsive and committed to turning public expectations into measurable results.

“Our people deserve leadership that listens, acts and delivers. Together, we must continue advancing opportunities and improving livelihoods,” she said.

Her remarks placed emphasis on the role of collective action in addressing community needs, with welfare groups providing a platform through which residents can organise themselves, pursue shared interests and engage with leaders on development priorities.

Such groups can also help strengthen community participation in development by bringing people together around common social and economic objectives.

The gathering provided an opportunity for leaders and residents to reaffirm the importance of investing in people as a foundation for inclusive growth and improved living standards.

Wamuratha, who serves as Kiambu Woman Representative, has positioned community empowerment as a key element of her public engagement, stressing the need for leadership to produce outcomes that citizens can experience in their daily lives.

Her message at the Laikipia event also underscored the value of cooperation across counties in promoting ideas and initiatives that support education, economic opportunity and social inclusion.

She called for sustained efforts to expand opportunities and improve livelihoods, arguing that meaningful empowerment must ultimately enable people to build better futures for themselves and their families.

The event brought together political leaders and community stakeholders around a shared message that development should be judged not only by the commitments made by leaders, but also by the opportunities created and the lives improved.

For Wamuratha, the central test of leadership remains its ability to respond to citizens’ needs and deliver practical change.
