The Government is planning to put up modern hostels at Thika Technical Training Institute and Kenya Medical Training College Thika campus to address housing shortage for students.

Deputy President Prof Kithure Kindiki revealed that the government has set aside sh 672 million to construct a 2000-bed capacity hostel facility at TTTI. He divulged that another sh 580 million has been allocated for a similar project at KMTC to house 1,160 students.

The projects come amid a shortage of housing facilities for learners in Thika town which has forced most students to reside in the outskirts of Thika town and Witeithie estate-a peri-urban settlement in the neighboring Thika Constituency.

“For our young people in technical institutions, we are constructing hostels so that they can have decent accommodation, study in better conditions, pass their examinations, support their families and contribute to building our nation,” the DP said.

He spoke at Muguga area in Thika East while inspecting development projects including the Gatuanyaga ESP market and launching tarmacking if the 6.7 kilometers Kwaheri-Mary Magdalena road.

He was accompanied by area MP Alice Ng’ang’a and a host of other leaders including Bishop David Ngari alias Gakuyo, Joachim Njama among other leaders.

Prof Kindiki noted that the two projects will be implemented in the shortest time possible so as give learners a conducive environment to study and live in.

He also noted that the projects are part of the ongoing affordable housing projects being undertaken by the Kenya Kwanza government in Thika town constituency.

“We are also implementing affordable housing projects, with decent and affordable homes for the people of Thika. This will help address informal settlements and support the transformation of Thika into the modern city it was originally planned to become,” he said.

The DP added, “There are many affordable housing projects in Kiambu. In Thika, we have the Thika Depot housing project, which is 70 per cent complete and involves the construction of 412 houses at a cost of KSh1 billion.”

Other similar projects include the Thika UTI project, where the government is constructing 573 houses at a cost of KSh1.5 billion, Kings Orchard which is 70 per cent complete to deliver 675 houses at a cost of KSh1.5 billion and Thika Bustani with 875 houses at a cost of KSh2.1 billion.

Prof Kindiki added that the government is implementing other projects within Kiambu County including markets to boost trade and perk up the region’s economy.

“Across Kiambu County, you have received many markets through the Government of President William Ruto. Out of the nearly 600 markets we are constructing across Kenya, Kiambu County alone has received 29 markets, and we are adding two more to bring the total to 31. Out of these 31 markets, five are in Thika Town Constituency,” he said.

On her part, MP Ng’ang’a who’s vying for the Kiambu County governor position hailed the government for the projects saying that they will transform the region and improve the welfare of residents.
