Kiambu County Government, under the stewardship of Governor Kimani Wamatangi, has been recognized as the best-performing county in the implementation of the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Programme (NAVCDP) for the 2025–2026 period, marking a major milestone in the county’s agricultural transformation agenda.
The recognition places Kiambu at the forefront of counties effectively strengthening agricultural productivity, improving farmer incomes, and modernizing farming systems through inclusive, innovative, and sustainable approaches. The achievement reflects the county administration’s deliberate investment in grassroots farming communities and its commitment to positioning agriculture as a key driver of economic growth.
One of the standout areas cited in the evaluation is Kiambu County’s robust support for small-scale farmers. Through Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs), cooperatives, grants, small-scale farmer groups, and Common Interest Groups (CIGs), the county has enabled farmers to access affordable credit, markets, and technical support. These interventions have significantly enhanced farmers’ capacity to expand production and adopt value addition practices.
The county has also earned praise for its progressive approach to youth empowerment in agriculture. By hiring young, digitally enabled agripreneurs, the Kiambu County Government has injected innovation into the sector while creating employment opportunities for the youth. These agripreneurs have been instrumental in supporting farmers at the grassroots level through soil testing, data-driven advisory services, and the adoption of modern farming technologies aimed at improving yields and sustainability.
According to county records, Kiambu has supported more than 700,000 farmers across its 60 wards during the period under review. This support includes the distribution of free farm inputs such as fertilizer, certified maize and bean seeds, avocado and tree seedlings, piglets, and chicks. The wide-reaching initiative has helped cushion farmers against high production costs while enhancing food security and household incomes.
Speaking on the achievement, county officials attributed the success to strong leadership, effective coordination with national government agencies, and a farmer-centered development strategy. Governor Wamatangi’s administration has consistently emphasized accountability, results-driven governance, and practical solutions tailored to the needs of Kiambu’s diverse farming communities.
Agricultural stakeholders have welcomed the recognition, noting that Kiambu’s model offers a blueprint for other counties seeking to strengthen agricultural value chains and empower smallholder farmers. The county’s performance under NAVCDP underscores the growing importance of agriculture in driving inclusive development and resilience in the face of climate and economic challenges.
As Kiambu County builds on this success, the government has reaffirmed its commitment to scaling up agricultural investments, embracing innovation, and ensuring that farmers remain at the heart of the county’s development agenda.
