KINAP Offers New Opportunity for Hospitality Training and Careers in Germany

Young Kenyans aspiring to build international careers in the hospitality and gastronomy industry have been offered a new pathway to professional training and paid apprenticeships in Germany through a two-stage programme being implemented by the Kiambu National Polytechnic (KINAP) in partnership with German hospitality stakeholders.

The programme is designed to equip selected participants with German language proficiency, practical hospitality skills, intercultural knowledge and an understanding of Germany’s dual vocational training system before they proceed to apprenticeships with partner hotels.

The initiative comes as Kenya continues to seek international opportunities for its young workforce, particularly through skills development, technical and vocational education and training (TVET), and structured labour mobility programmes.

Selection for the programme will begin with an Assessment Centre in October 2026, where applicants will undergo practical tests and interviews designed to establish whether they possess the competencies required for successful careers in the hospitality industry.

Among the qualities to be assessed are teamwork, communication, resilience, hand-eye coordination, organisational ability and motivation.

Successful candidates will then face interviews conducted by leading German hotels in November 2026, with those selected expected to sign pre-agreements with the participating establishments.

    German language key to selection

Applicants must have German language skills at A2 level, with B1 proficiency preferred.

They should also have some previous experience in the hospitality sector and, importantly, demonstrate a strong commitment to pursuing an international career in hospitality.

The programme is being presented as more than an opportunity to travel abroad, with organisers emphasising preparation, professional discipline and cultural adaptation as critical components of the journey.

Those who make it through the selection process will enter the first stage of the programme in Kenya.

    Six months of intensive preparation

Stage One will be implemented by Kiambu National Polytechnic in close cooperation with the German Association of Hotels and Restaurants.

The introductory course will run for six months, from January to June 2027, and will prepare successful candidates for the transition into Germany’s vocational training environment.

Training will include German language instruction up to B1 level, intercultural orientation and country knowledge.

Participants will also be introduced to Germany’s dual vocational training system, while gaining practical insights into hospitality and culinary operations.

The course will additionally cover mathematics and digital skills relevant to their future professions.

KINAP has cautioned prospective applicants that participant fees will apply during the Kenyan stage, in line with the institution’s TVET course fee structure.

The second stage will take successful trainees to Germany, where they are expected to begin apprenticeships in partner hotels in September 2027.

Earn while you train in Germany

Unlike the preparatory phase in Kenya, the apprenticeship stage in Germany will not attract training fees.

Instead, participants will receive a monthly training allowance from the hotels while undertaking vocational training.

The apprenticeships will follow Germany’s dual vocational education and training model, combining practical workplace experience with learning in a vocational school.

The programme offers two main career pathways — hospitality specialist and kitchen specialist — providing young people with an opportunity to gain internationally recognised professional experience.

    Hospitality specialists

The Hospitality Specialist (FK Gastro) pathway is aimed at developing all-round professionals capable of supporting hospitality teams in day-to-day operations, particularly in guest services.

The vocational training will take two years and will include a midterm and final examination.

Trainees will also undertake a four-month specialisation in either restaurant service or system catering.

Those who wish to advance their qualifications can opt for a third year of training leading to certification as a Restaurant Specialist (ReVa) or System Catering Specialist (SyFa).

    Kitchen pathway

The Kitchen Specialist (FK Küche) pathway is targeted at practically oriented young people interested in professional culinary careers.

Kitchen specialists work alongside chefs in preparing meals and dishes and handle preparatory and follow-up activities. They are also trained to independently prepare simple dishes.

The training takes two years and includes an interim examination and a final examination.

The final examination for Kitchen Specialist is equivalent to the first part of the examination for the Cook/Chef qualification, creating an opportunity for trainees to progress.

Participants may choose a third year of training to qualify as a Chef.

    Long-term career prospects

One of the programme’s major attractions is the possibility of building a long-term career in Germany after successful completion of the apprenticeship.

Graduates who meet the applicable requirements will have the option of remaining in Germany and pursuing employment in the hospitality sector.

The initiative therefore provides a structured progression from initial selection in Kenya, through language and cultural preparation, to professional training and potential employment in Germany.

For young Kenyans seeking international exposure, the programme could also provide an opportunity to acquire practical skills in one of Europe’s highly developed hospitality markets while gaining experience working in a multicultural environment.

    Applications open

Prospective applicants have been urged to begin preparing their applications ahead of the selection exercise.

Applications are expected to include a curriculum vitae (CV) and motivation letter, with the deadline set for September 8, 2026.

The Assessment Centre will follow in October, while interviews by participating German hotels are scheduled for November.

The first stage of training is scheduled to begin in January 2027, followed by the planned commencement of apprenticeships in Germany in September 2027.

The programme organisers are encouraging young Kenyans with hospitality experience, German language skills and a strong desire to develop an international career to seize the opportunity.

For applicants, the message is clear that the road to a career in Germany begins not with a flight ticket, but with skills, preparation, discipline and a successful selection process.
