AWS Partnership to Accelerate Kenya’s Digital Skills, AI and Cloud Agenda

Kenya is seeking to deepen its partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to expand digital skills training, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and connectivity as the country accelerates its digital transformation agenda.

Information, Communications and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo held talks with AWS officials in Nairobi on Thursday, with discussions focusing on how the technology giant can support the Government’s efforts to equip more young Kenyans with industry-ready digital skills and expand access to emerging technologies.

A key focus of the engagement was the AWS re/Start programme, which has trained thousands of Kenyans in cloud computing. Kenya has recorded a 45 per cent placement rate among participants who have undergone the programme, highlighting the growing demand for specialised skills in the digital economy.

Mr Kabogo said the Government wants to scale up such initiatives by making better use of existing digital infrastructure, including Jitume Digital Hubs, while expanding collaboration with universities, colleges and other tertiary institutions.

The strategy is aimed at taking digital skills training beyond major urban centres and opening up opportunities for young people in underserved communities to access training linked directly to employment and the changing needs of the technology industry.

“Equally important is ensuring the quality of training and equipping our young people with practical, industry-relevant skills that respond to the evolving demands of the digital economy,” Mr Kabogo said.

The Government sees cloud computing and artificial intelligence as critical components of Kenya’s digital economy, with the technologies increasingly shaping public services, businesses, education and employment.

The partnership with AWS is therefore expected to support not only skills development but also wider adoption of cloud technologies and AI, while strengthening the digital infrastructure needed to connect more Kenyans to the opportunities created by the digital economy.

The use of Jitume Digital Hubs offers an existing network through which training programmes can be taken closer to communities, particularly young people who may lack access to advanced technology and specialised training in their localities.

The Government is also seeking stronger links between industry and institutions of higher learning to ensure that graduates acquire skills that match the requirements of employers rather than relying solely on traditional academic qualifications.

The discussions further covered e-government, artificial intelligence and connectivity, signalling a broader partnership that could extend beyond training to the digitalisation of public services and expansion of access to technology.

Mr Kabogo said the Government looks forward to deepening its collaboration with AWS as it pursues an inclusive, innovative and competitive digital economy.

The engagement comes as Kenya continues to position digital technology as a driver of economic growth, job creation and improved public service delivery.

With cloud computing, AI and other emerging technologies rapidly transforming workplaces, the Government faces increasing pressure to close the digital skills gap and ensure that young people are prepared for jobs created by the new economy.

The AWS partnership is expected to complement other Government initiatives aimed at expanding digital access, skills development and connectivity, particularly in areas that have historically remained underserved.

The meeting was attended by AWS Head of Public Sector, Sub-Saharan Africa Robin Njiru, OGW; ICT and Digital Economy Principal Secretary John Tanui; Konza Technopolis Chief Executive Officer Paul Okwiri and other senior government officials.
