The Kiambu County Government is stepping up its grassroots economic empowerment agenda with the introduction of a financial support kitty for women’s Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs) and the continued expansion of initiatives targeting boda boda operators across the county.
Speaking during the Kiambu County Women’s Day celebrations held at the county headquarters in Kiambu Town, Governor Kimani Wamatangi reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the financial independence of women through targeted investments and inclusive economic policies.

The Governor announced that the county is in the process of designing a dedicated fund aimed at supporting women’s SACCOs to establish and grow their capital bases, enabling them to expand their businesses and improve household incomes.
According to the county leadership, the initiative is part of a broader grassroots economic transformation programme focused on empowering women as key drivers of local development and sustainable livelihoods.
In addition to the proposed kitty, the county government has consistently reserved a portion of public procurement opportunities specifically for individual women entrepreneurs and registered women’s groups, creating greater access to government business opportunities and promoting financial inclusion.
Addressing the Women’s Day celebrations, Governor Wamatangi praised the contribution of women to Kiambu’s economic and social development, emphasizing that empowering women translates directly into stronger families and more resilient communities.
The women’s empowerment programme complements similar initiatives targeting the transport sector through the county’s Kazi Na Boda Programme.

In a previous engagement, boda boda SACCOs drawn from Ndeiya, Limuru East, Limuru Central, Ngecha/Tigoni and Bibirioni wards in Limuru Sub-County received financial support through cheques issued under the programme to help strengthen their capital base and facilitate future investments.
The funding is expected to enable the SACCOs to improve financial stability, expand services to members and create opportunities for long-term economic growth within the sector.
Governor Wamatangi also revealed that the county government is developing an initiative that will facilitate motorcycle riders who have been operating without valid driving licences to enrol in accredited driving schools. The programme seeks to enhance road safety, promote compliance with traffic regulations and improve professionalism within the boda boda industry.
Additionally, plans are underway to roll out an insurance cover programme aimed at providing greater financial security and social protection for riders, many of whom depend on the sector as their primary source of livelihood.
The combined interventions targeting women entrepreneurs and boda boda operators underscore the county administration’s broader development philosophy of expanding economic opportunities at the grassroots level while promoting inclusive growth.
Governor Wamatangi reiterated that the programmes form part of his administration’s ongoing commitment to improving livelihoods, supporting enterprise development and creating sustainable opportunities for residents across Kiambu County under the banners of “Making Kiambu Great Again,” “Kazi Ndiyo Hiyo,” and “Roho Ndiyo Hiyo.”
