Wave of Arson Attacks Shuts Down High Schools in Gatundu South

A series of fire incidents has swept through high schools in Gatundu South, Kiambu County, forcing the closure of four institutions, including Mururia Boys High School, where a dormitory was set ablaze on September 5. Schools like Muhoho High, Uchekeini Boys, and Githiga Boys in Githunguri have also been shut down indefinitely after similar arson attacks on classrooms and dormitories. With the KCSE exams looming in mid-October, parents are expressing outrage, blaming school management for failing to curb the unrest, with some suspecting the fires are linked to students’ fears of the upcoming exams.

A spate of fire incidences across various high schools in Gatundu South, Kiambu county, continues to cause uneasy unrest amongst parents only two weeks after the schools were reopened for the Final term this year.

So far 4 Schools have been closed down with the latest being Mururia Boys high school where one of the dormitories was set on fire on Friday 5th September.

Others are Muhoho high and Uchekeini boys which also been closed down indefinitely after the arson meted on classrooms and dormitories respectively.

In Githunguri Githiga boys remains closed down now two weeks after the students burnt down the dormitories, while in Lari, four other schools including Gatamaiyu boys, Lari boys add to the growing list of the incidences.

Parents have now raised concerns over the spate with school authorities being put on the spot ” All these are happening under the watch of the School management and nothing is being done and now I know the damage will be sort by us parents considering we have already completed paying fees.It is such a sad day for us” an irate parent told the Kiambu Observer.

Reports indicate that some of the incidents could be led to students fearing facing the oncoming exams.

The KCSE exams are expected to commence mid October.
