The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) inaugurated its first Leadership Academy Alumni Conference in Nairobi. Dignitaries and young professionals gathered at the Windsor Golf Hotel for the significant event. The meeting operated under the theme “Harnessing Youth Leadership to Drive Africa’s Growth.”

Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu attended the session. Their presence highlighted a strategic focus on youth as drivers of regional stability. Officials utilized the platform to emphasize the importance of nurturing the next generation of administrators.

The primary objective of the conference involved launching the ILA Alumni Network. Participants also worked to establish national chapters to strengthen cross-border collaboration. The organization intends for these structures to support peace initiatives and improved governance throughout the region.

Dr. Gebeyehu delivered remarks concerning the state of African leadership. He argued that the continent requires individuals who prioritize responsibility over hesitation. According to the Executive Secretary, legitimate leadership demands a commitment to service rather than a reliance on titles.

He further explained that the network aims to transform personal conviction into sustained action. Through this initiative, alumni will engage in mentorship and dialogue. Gebeyehu assured the attendees of IGAD’s continued assistance as they work toward regional integration.

The IGAD Leadership Academy was established in 2022 after receiving approval from IGAD Heads of State and Government. Supported by the Government of Japan, the program has mentored more than 80 young leaders. The academy recruits participants from across the trade bloc to foster regional cooperation.
