A somber mood engulfed the residents of Kirenga village in Lari Sub-county as a 47-year-old Catholic Church catechist was laid to rest.

Harrison Mungai, who served at St. Peter the Rock in Kinoo Parish, was described as a humble and hardworking servant. Mungai, who passed away after a short illness, was remembered for his “big heart” and his ability to accommodate people from all walks of life.

Paul Ngugi, the Chairman of Lari Sub-county Traders, stated that society had lost a man who knew no boundaries when it came to helping others.

“He loved people and always made time to listen. He didn’t care whether you were Catholic or not,” Ngugi said.

As mourners eulogized him, Stephen Ngigi Ng’ang’a—a friend of the deceased and a candidate for the Lari Kirenga MCA seat—pledged to cover the education costs for Mungai’s eldest son, who is currently in Form Four.

“When I learned of Mungai’s passing and his time in the hospital, I stepped in to pay school fees for his firstborn son. As we bid him goodbye, he can rest assured that I have covered the fees for both the second and third terms,” Ngigi announced.

Ngigi added that, inspired by Mungai’s own spirit of service, he felt it was vital to stand with the family by ensuring the son’s high school education was fully funded.

Speaking to journalists, Ngigi also made a plea for national peace, noting that it is the foundation of coexistence.

“Even in the absence of war or unrest, it is important to pray and campaign for peace. It guarantees security, free movement, and many other positive outcomes for the community,” he said.

Naomi Wanja, a local trader, thanked Ngigi for his kindness, noting that such selflessness is rare.

“This is a challenge to many of our leaders. Ngigi isn’t just playing politics; he has been campaigning for empowerment and mutual support,” Wanja remarked.

The late catechist, who was born in Kirenga village, is survived by his wife and three children.
