The nation and the gospel music community mourn the sudden passing of renowned gospel artist, Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, popularly known as Betty Bayo. We extend our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones.

Betty Bayo’s journey to becoming a household name began with humble origins. She was raised in Kangoya, Ndumberi, Kiambu, where her mother had rented a room in the village around 2008. She attended Riara Secondary School in Turitu, Kiambu, and despite facing numerous personal and educational challenges, she successfully completed her schooling.

Her musical talent began to take professional form when she joined the Redeemed Gospel Church worship team, now known as Furaha Worship Centre, under the stewardship of the Right Reverend Peter Gachara in Kiambu town. Reverend Gachara and the church community quickly recognized her gift and became instrumental in nurturing her career.

The church organized the video shoot for her debut song, “Eleventh Hour.” This track resonated deeply with audiences, conveying the emotional and personal struggles Betty was navigating at the time. Prior to the video, Betty had produced an audio CD of her work.

The writer, then a news correspondent for Inooro FM in Kiambu, first encountered her professionally when she handed him a copy of her music. Securing airplay for artists in that era was often challenging. However, through persistent efforts, Betty’s song was presented to Waithira Muithirania, the Inooro FM Morning Show Presenter, who gave it its first broadcast.

The song immediately garnered high listener requests. It soon made its way to the top of the Sunday Countdown chart on Kameme FM, where it dominated for several weeks. This consistent success served as a significant breakthrough, establishing Betty Bayo’s career and providing a platform that elevated many artists of the time.

Following her musical breakthrough, Betty Bayo quickly became a recognized figure in her village before moving on. She is remembered not only for her vocal talent but also for her sustained humility and genuine spirit, even after achieving widespread success. She remains an inspiration for young, aspiring musicians across Kiambu and the entire country.
