Chief Justice Martha Koome has announced the passing of Supreme Court Judge and Judicial Service Commission (JSC) Commissioner, Justice Mohammed Kadhar Ibrahim. The Judiciary leadership conveyed deep sorrow regarding the loss of a jurist described as a steady and thoughtful voice for justice. This announcement marks a significant moment of mourning for the legal fraternity and the nation at large.

Before his tenure on the bench, Justice Ibrahim established a reputation as a trailblazing advocate and human rights defender. Admitted to the Bar in 1982, he became the first member of the Kenyan Somali community to serve as an Advocate of the High Court. He engaged deeply in public interest litigation, working with organizations such as Kituo cha Sheria and the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights.

His commitment to justice was tested during Kenya’s fight for multiparty democracy in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Ibrahim stood firmly with pro-democracy forces, offering legal support to activists and marginalized communities. His principled stance led to his detention without trial, an experience that solidified his lifelong dedication to constitutionalism, the rule of law, and the protection of human dignity.

Justice Ibrahim joined the Judiciary in 2003, initially serving as a Judge of the High Court across various stations. In 2011, he was elevated to the Supreme Court as a member of its inaugural bench. He was entrusted with the historic responsibility of interpreting Kenya’s transformative 2010 Constitution. His career was characterized by intellectual rigour, calm impartiality, and a profound concern for the vulnerable.

In 2022, his colleagues at the Supreme Court unanimously elected him as their representative to the Judicial Service Commission. In this capacity, he championed transparency, integrity, and judicial independence. He also played a critical role in strengthening institutional preparedness for electoral disputes, notably serving as Chairperson of the Judiciary Committee on Elections.

Chief Justice Koome described Justice Ibrahim as a jurist of exceptional humility and integrity. She noted that his legacy bridges courageous advocacy with principled judging. The Chief Justice emphasized his role as a collegial judge and a quiet mentor who valued principles over prominence. His life exemplified fidelity to his oath of office and service to the country.

The Judiciary, Supreme Court, and JSC have expressed solidarity with Justice Ibrahim’s family and friends during this difficult period. They have called for sensitivity and compassion as the community shares in this collective grief. The statement concluded with a prayer for his soul to rest in eternal peace.
