State Unveils Major Infrastructure Plans and Grants to Boost Nyeri Economy

A resource mobilization drive held in Mathira Constituency today served as the backdrop for significant government announcements regarding the development trajectory of Nyeri County. Hosted by Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi, the event was primarily convened to support nano, micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) but also highlighted a broad roadmap for regional growth.

To stimulate the grassroots economy, the government unveiled a capital injection scheme targeting 70 youth-led businesses in every ward, with each enterprise receiving a grant of Sh50,000 for expansion. This financial support complements the ongoing construction of modern fresh produce markets, which are designed to elevate business standards and provide better trading environments for local merchants.

Major shifts in infrastructure planning were also confirmed during the address. The design for the proposed dual carriageway stretching from Karatina to Isiolo via Nanyuki will be specifically routed through Nyeri Town. This strategic decision is intended to bolster the necessary infrastructure required to elevate Nyeri Municipality to full city status in the near future.

The government is concurrently intensifying its focus on essential utilities. The current Last Mile Connectivity programme, originally funded at Sh800 million to connect 1,000 new households to the grid, has received a significant upscale of an additional Sh600 million. This funding increase is part of a comprehensive programme that also includes the rollout of new bitumen roads and expanded water connections for both households and businesses.

The high-profile event saw a strong turnout of regional leadership. Joining the host MP and local residents were Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga, Woman Representative Rahab Mukami, and Members of Parliament Wambugu Wainaina (Othaya), Duncan Mathenge (Nyeri Town), and Wainaina wa Chieni (Kieni), alongside various Members of the County Assembly (MCAs).
