Ten high school students are receiving treatment at AIC Kijabe Hospital after their bus overturned at Kimende along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway in Lari, Kiambu County.

The Bishop Okoth High School students were returning to Siaya from Nairobi following the third-term holiday. Their journey was cut short when the driver of the Guardian Bus allegedly lost control, causing the vehicle to veer into a ditch.

Traffic police officers from Lari Police Station, led by Base Commander Abraham Kiplagat, visited the injured students and confirmed they are in stable condition.

The Monday night accident drew a large crowd of local residents to the scene.

”We were alerted by a loud crash followed by the students’ screams,” said Njoroge Kamande, the local community policing chairman. “We arrived in large numbers and began helping students and other passengers escape the wreckage.”

Kamande noted that police patrolling the highway arrived quickly to assist with the evacuation.

Commander Kiplagat stated that the crash did not cause a traffic jam as the bus landed off the main road.

”The accident was self-involving,” Kiplagat said, urging motorists to adhere to recommended speed limits to ensure they can maintain control of their vehicles during emergencies.

Kamande, who is also a pastor, suggested that the highway requires spiritual intervention due to the high frequency of accidents in the area.

”We have seen too many accidents lately. We are planning to hold prayer sessions with other church leaders to cleanse the highway. We want to prevent further incidents, whether they are minor or fatal,” he added.
