Residents of Lari Sub-county are appealing to the Limuru Water and Sewerage Company to fence Bathi Dam in Lari Sub-county, Kiambu County, after the body of a 29-year-old was found dead and floating.
A resident, Charles Manji, said locals are disturbed by the incident and others where dead bodies of people, including animals, have been retrieved.
Manji says the water is piped to people’s homes, adding that even if it is treated, locals do not feel comfortable when a dead body is discovered.
“We all feel disturbed when we hear of a dead body inside the dam. This is very unfortunate,” he said.
Moreover, Manji said since they have been asking for the fencing of the dam and nothing has been done, he asked Governor Kimani Wamatangi to hand over the dam to Lari Municipality, since they can manage it and see it fenced.
“Some years ago, Lari was under Limuru Municipality, but it is a municipality today. The Governor should move in quickly and transfer some projects from Limuru Municipality to Lari, like the dam,” he said.
”With a new municipality, the officials will move fast to see it fenced so as to prevent people and animals from drowning,” Manji said.
Gitau Kibaya’s body was noticed by passersby on Tuesday, as the dam lies along a road which is about 700 meters from the Nairobi-Nakuru highway to Bathi village.
The Sub-county Police Commander, Emily Ngaruiya, confirmed the incident, saying it is not clear when the man drowned since his family did not report his disappearance.
She, however, said the body was retrieved and identified by locals and family members.
The OCPD also added that the body was taken to Uplands Funeral Home as detectives investigate the incident.
”It is very important to report to the police when a member of the family goes missing. Anything may happen, and the report one makes helps a lot during investigations,” the police boss said.
