A row has erupted over the expansion of the Ruiru Vocational Training Center (VTC) in Kiambu County, with locals accusing some government officials of sabotage.
The showdown saw some construction workers at the site, which is located within the Githunguri Ranching Primary School grounds, arrested and detained at a local police station before being released.
Area Member of the County Assembly (MCA), Kimani wa Nduta, who led residents in erecting a perimeter wall around the facility, accused some political leaders and national government officials of being opposed to the project, which is funded by Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s county government.
He stated that the county government intends to establish a cabro blocks making plant at the two-acre parcel of land set aside by the Githunguri Constituency Ranching land buying company for the VTC. The training center is sandwiched between the primary school and Githunguri Ranching Secondary School.
Kimani claimed that Members of Parliament from the county had ganged up to sabotage projects initiated by the devolved unit or were duplicating the same for political mileage.
He also charged that the National Lands Commission (NLC) seems to have taken sides in the row and is supporting those opposed to the county project.
However, when reached for comment, area Deputy County Commissioner Julius Too said the NLC has intervened and will give its direction on the disputed boundaries between the three public institutions.
