Police canteens (often run by Administration Police or general police divisions in Kenya) are popular recreational joints that offer food and beverages—frequently at subsidized or below-market prices—to police officers, their families, and members of the public. Because they operate within security precincts and cater to civil servants, they are expected to maintain strict security, discipline, and order.
However, conflicts can arise when the boundary between law enforcement officers and civilian patrons blurs. Recent incidents at popular canteens have sparked public concern over excessive force, arbitrary rules, and abuse of power by officers against unarmed patrons seeking affordable entertainment.
Police authorities in Kiambu Sub-County have launched formal investigations into troubling incidents reported at the popular Kiambu Administration Police (AP) Canteen.

Kiambu Sub-County Police Commander (OCPD) Elema Sora confirmed that his office has received disturbing reports of assault involving AP officers and revellers at the establishment.
The investigation comes in the wake of viral social media posts detailing an incident where two men were allegedly assaulted even after paying a bill of Kshs10,000 following an altercation at the venue.
The account, shared online by a niece of one of the victims, revealed that the situation escalated when officers seized a phone belonging to one of the ladies they were with the men while she was recording the incident, destroyed the device, and forcibly ejected her from the premises.
Several patrons of the establishment—which is known for selling beer at cheaper prices—have characterized the ongoing situation as unacceptable and in urgent need of decisive intervention.
Addressing the allegations, Commander Sora committed to taking appropriate action against any wrongdoing. He noted, however, that the canteen enforces specific access restrictions—including prohibiting individuals under the age of 25 from entering—which he suggested may contribute to some of the altercations.
Sora assured the public that authorities will enforce discipline and restore order at the facility, urging anyone with grievances to report them through official channels for swift resolution.
