Kenyan President William Ruto has conferred state honors upon environmental activist Truphena Muthoni following her campaign to embrace a tree for three consecutive days. The President hosted Muthoni at his office to recognize her recent efforts to raise awareness regarding environmental conservation and climate change. According to a statement released by President Ruto, Muthoni spent 72 continuous hours embracing an indigenous tree. The President characterized this action as a record-breaking and symbolic gesture intended to highlight the urgency of climate action.

During the engagement, President Ruto announced Muthoni’s appointment as an Ambassador for the 15 Billion Tree Planting Campaign. The President praised Muthoni’s dedication, citing her courage and leadership as the primary motivation behind the appointment. In addition to the ambassadorial role, the President confirmed that several state agencies have offered incentives to the activist and her team. The Kenya Wildlife Service and the Kenya Tourism Board have extended a fully sponsored holiday experience to the group.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry has committed to supporting Muthoni’s travel to Brazil. President Ruto stated that this trip is intended to broaden her exposure to global conservation initiatives and environmental leadership. To conclude the recognition of her service to environmental stewardship, President Ruto awarded Muthoni the Head of State Commendation (HSC) Medal. The President noted that this honor reflects the nation’s appreciation for her spirit and determination.

The 15 Billion Tree Planting Campaign is a flagship project of the Kenyan government aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and restoring the country’s ecosystem. The initiative targets the restoration of 10.6 million hectares of degraded landscape to achieve a national tree cover of 30 percent by 2032. The Head of State Commendation (HSC) is a civilian honor in Kenya awarded by the President to individuals who have rendered outstanding service to the nation in specific capacities, often recognizing contributions in areas such as community service, philanthropy, and acts of patriotism.
