Police Intensify Crackdown on Illicit Drugs in Githunguri, Kiambu County

On July 24, 2025, police from Ikinu Police Station, in collaboration with National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs), conducted a targeted operation in Githunguri, Kiambu County, recovering illicit drugs as part of ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking and abuse in the region.

In a concerted effort to combat the growing menace of illicit drugs in Kiambu County, police officers from Ikinu Police Station, working alongside National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs), executed a successful raid in Githunguri on July 24, 2025. The operation, part of a broader nationwide crackdown on illegal substances, resulted in the recovery of an unspecified quantity of illicit drugs, marking a significant step in addressing drug-related challenges in the area.

The raid comes amid heightened concerns over drug abuse in Kiambu County, particularly in Githunguri, where substances like cannabis (bhang) and illicit brews such as chang’aa have been linked to social and economic issues. Local authorities have identified Githunguri as a hotspot for drug trafficking, with past reports indicating that bhang is among the most abused narcotics in the region. A 2023 report by the Central Region Commissioner’s office noted that Kiambu County led with 55 kilograms and 997 rolls of cannabis seized between April and July, underscoring the scale of the problem.

The operation was spurred by intelligence from community members, highlighting the role of public cooperation in tackling the drug trade. While specific details about the recovered substances and any arrests made during the July 24 raid remain limited, the National Police Service emphasized its commitment to intensifying operations targeting production points, distribution networks, and retail dens of illicit drugs. This aligns with recent directives from Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who, on the same day, announced a renewed nationwide crackdown on illicit alcohol and drugs, vowing to target rogue businessmen and complicit government officers. Residents of Githunguri have long voiced concerns about the impact of drug abuse on their community.

A 2022 report from Ngenia village in Githunguri described youth addiction to alcohol and drugs as a pervasive issue, with some residents accusing local police of complicity in the trade. However, Githunguri OCPD Mary Kaimenyi previously denied such claims, asserting that law enforcement is committed to eradicating the menace. The latest raid suggests a renewed effort to address these longstanding issues.

The operation also reflects broader regional efforts to curb drug abuse. In Kiambu, initiatives like the Medically Assisted Therapy clinic in Karuri, established in 2021, have aimed to provide holistic support for addicts, particularly in areas like Kiambaa with high addiction rates. Meanwhile, the government’s use of advanced tactics, such as drone technology, has been proposed to enhance surveillance and enforcement in Central Kenya, including Kiambu.

As investigations into the July 24 raid continue, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. The crackdown is expected to persist, with a focus on dismantling drug networks and reducing the availability of illicit substances in Kiambu County. This operation underscores the ongoing battle to restore safety and stability to communities affected by the drug trade.
