It was a sad evening in Kabunge village, Lari Kirenga ward, in Lari Sub-County, when an 11-year-old girl was found to have committed suicide. The screams of women who had gone to fetch firewood were heard from a nearby forest, attracting locals.
The Grade 6 pupil went missing on Sunday when she did not return home. Her family members spent Sunday night searching the whole village for her without success.
A resident, Mwaniki Gikaru, said the family members reported the girl missing at the Escarpment Police Post and at the Chief’s office. However, their search ended when her body was found inside the forest.
Confirming the incident, Lari Sub-County Police Commander Emily Ngaruiya said the girl hanged herself using her pullover.
The police commander said no one knows what led the girl to commit suicide, adding that they have launched investigations into the incident.
“No one knows what pushed the girl to go to the forest and commit suicide. However, our detectives are investigating, and we shall get to the bottom of what happened,” she said.
Lari Kirenga MCA Josphat Kinyanjui has asked locals to remain calm and support the family.
“It is so sad to lose a young girl. She had a promising future. Let us join hands and console the family at this time,” he said.
