Kiambu MP Machua Waithaka has stepped up efforts to address growing security concerns in Riabai Ward following reports of attempted shop break-ins and robbery incidents that have left residents and traders increasingly worried about their safety.
Waithaka joined residents, area Chief Hosea Gikwa and police officers led by the Deputy Officer Commanding Police Station (OCS) in a security engagement aimed at identifying the challenges facing the community and agreeing on practical measures to protect residents and businesses.
The meeting provided residents with an opportunity to directly raise concerns over incidents of insecurity, particularly at night when businesses are vulnerable to criminal activity.
Among the issues highlighted were attempted break-ins at shops and reported cases of robbery, prompting calls for enhanced police presence and closer cooperation between residents, local administration and security agencies.
Following the deliberations, police agreed to increase night patrols within the affected areas as part of efforts to deter criminals, respond more swiftly to incidents and reassure residents and traders.
Waithaka said the safety of residents must remain a priority, noting that businesses cannot thrive in an environment where traders live in constant fear of losing their property or livelihoods to criminals.
He said the security situation required a coordinated approach in which residents work closely with the police and local administration to identify suspicious activities and ensure timely reporting of incidents.
The MP also warned those involved in criminal activities that they would face the full force of the law once apprehended.
The firm stance is expected to strengthen cooperation between the community and security agencies as authorities move to prevent crime rather than wait for incidents to occur.
The meeting also underscored the importance of community participation in maintaining security. Residents were encouraged to remain vigilant, share information with law enforcement officers and work with local administrators to address emerging threats.
For traders, improved security is particularly important as shops and other businesses remain exposed to theft and break-ins during the night.
Waithaka said protecting businesses was equally important because many families depend on small enterprises for their livelihoods.
“Our people deserve to live and conduct their businesses in a safe and secure environment,” he said, reaffirming his commitment to working with residents and security agencies to tackle the challenges facing the area.
The engagement comes amid growing recognition that effective policing requires more than patrols alone. Collaboration between residents, chiefs, police officers and elected leaders can help authorities identify crime hotspots, improve information sharing and respond more effectively to emerging security threats.
Residents, meanwhile, welcomed the engagement, saying regular consultations with security agencies could help address concerns before they escalate into more serious problems.

Without adequate security, traders struggle to operate freely, residents face uncertainty and investment in local enterprises can suffer.
For Riabai residents, the immediate priority is therefore to see the agreed night patrols translate into a sustained security presence and a reduction in cases of theft, break-ins and robbery.
Waithaka pledged to maintain close contact with residents and security officials as the situation is monitored, saying the goal was to ensure that people could go about their daily activities without fear.
“Yangu Ni Kazi Tu!” remains his rallying call as he seeks to demonstrate that leadership should be measured not only by promises but by practical action on issues affecting residents’ daily lives.
