Mount Kenya University (MKU) has formally awarded an educational scholarship to Kenyan environmentalist Truphena Muthoni. The university administration announced the sponsorship on Wednesday, December 17, 2025. This financial support serves to recognize Muthoni’s persistent dedication to environmental conservation and her efforts to raise awareness about ecological issues within the region.

The scholarship was facilitated through the MKU Foundation, the institution’s charitable arm. During the presentation, university officials highlighted Muthoni’s academic ambition and her record of community engagement. They described the scholarship as a means to support her educational path while she continues her advocacy work. The university maintains that formal education provides the necessary tools to turn individual passion into effective action.

Muthoni has achieved recognition for her unconventional methods of environmental activism. The university specifically cited her record-breaking feat involving the longest tree hug as a significant milestone. According to MKU, such initiatives are vital for inspiring other young people to take an interest in the planet’s welfare. The administration expressed pride in supporting a student who actively contributes to a greener future.

The official handover ceremony involved the presentation of a symbolic check to Muthoni. The event underscored the university’s strategy of identifying and nurturing leadership qualities among its student body. By partnering with Muthoni, MKU aims to demonstrate that youth can transform their communities when empowered with knowledge. The administration reiterated its commitment to fostering an environment where academic and social interests intersect.

The Mount Kenya University Foundation has been operational for nearly a decade. Its mandate includes offering full and partial scholarships to a diverse range of students to help them achieve their academic goals. These financial aids are awarded to bona fide university students only after a thorough vetting and application procedure. Beyond individual scholarships, the foundation engages in broader programs designed to advance educational causes and serve the general community.
