MKU Founder Calls for Stricter Rules on Honorary Degrees to Protect Academic Integrity

The government has been urged to enact more stringent regulations governing the issuance of honorary degrees to curb abuse and preserve the integrity of higher education in Kenya.

Speaking during Mount Kenya University’s 28th graduation ceremony at the Thika main campus, MKU Founder and Chairman Dr. Simon Gicharu cautioned the more than 9,000 graduates that unregulated awarding of honorary degrees risks undermining public confidence in academic institutions.

Dr. Gicharu warned against the growing perception that some honorary degrees are handed out as tokens of political loyalty or patronage rather than genuine merit.

“Degrees must be earned through hard work in class,” he said, stressing that universities must safeguard academic dignity by maintaining strict standards, transparency, and fairness in all recognitions and awards.

His remarks were supported by South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro, whose wife was among the graduating class. Osoro underscored the importance of securing academic qualifications through dedication, noting that such achievements equip young people to compete effectively in the global marketplace.

He challenged the youth to embrace innovation and make use of the opportunities available in the current business-friendly climate instead of attributing unemployment to government shortcomings.

Chief Guest Dr. Aurelia Rono, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Parliamentary Affairs in the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, commended MKU for building strong business linkages that continue to benefit its alumni. She urged graduates to prioritise digital innovation as a driver of success and competitiveness in an increasingly technology-driven world.

Dr. Rono also encouraged young people to actively take part in national decision-making and development processes, emphasising that their contributions are essential to Kenya’s long-term progress.

Among the graduates was Faith Kwamboka, who completed her Bachelor of Education degree. She expressed gratitude and optimism, saying she is eager to pursue new opportunities and apply the skills gained during her academic journey with confidence.
