The healthcare landscape in the Mt. Kenya East region is set for a historic shift as construction hits full gear on a massive Sh1 billion expansion project at the Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital (MeTRH).
The centerpiece of the project—a state-of-the-art twin-tower hospital complex—is currently under construction. Once completed, the facility will house modern medical equipment and specialized units designed to handle complex cases that were previously referred to the capital.
The expansion is a strategic move to elevate the hospital from its current Level 5 status to a Level 6 National Teaching and Referral Hospital. This upgrade will introduce specialized services, including:
Advanced Oncology: Comprehensive cancer treatment and management.
Renal Excellence: Expanded kidney dialysis and treatment centers.
Specialized Surgery: Infrastructure for delicate and complex surgical proedure
For years, patients in Meru and neighboring counties have faced the double burden of illness and high travel costs, often journeying hundreds of kilometers to Nairobi for specialized care. The upgraded MeTRH is positioned to become the primary referral point for:
- Meru and Tharaka Nithi
- Embu and Laikipia
- Isiolo and Marsabit
By decentralizing high-level medical services, the project aims to save lives through faster intervention and significantly reduce the financial strain on families dealing with chronic illnesses.
During a high-level inspection of the site by Deputy president Kithure Kindiki, government officials and local leaders emphasized the urgency of the project. While urging the contractors to expedite the work, the leadership maintained a firm stance on “uncompromising quality,” demanding that the towers be completed on schedule to serve the public.
The inspection tour was a show of regional unity, led by Meru County Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia and Deputy Governor Linda Kiome. They were joined by a robust delegation of legislators, including:
- Elizabeth Kailemia (Woman Representative)
- Rahim Dawood (Imenti North MP)
- Dan Kiili (Igembe Central MP)
- Mpuru Aburi (Tigania East MP)
- Various Members of the County Assembly (MCAs)
“This is not just a building; it is a promise of dignity in healthcare for our people,” noted the leadership delegation during the tour.
Once the twin towers are operational, Meru will join a select group of counties hosting a national-tier health facility, marking a new era of medical self-sufficiency for Northern and Eastern Kenya.
