Machua Waithaka, the Member of Parliament for Kiambu Constituency, has intensified his development agenda over the past week, rolling out a series of economic empowerment, education, infrastructure and security projects aimed at transforming livelihoods across the constituency.
From distribution of livestock to road construction and installation of street lighting, the legislator’s engagements have touched nearly every corner of the constituency, underscoring his development mantra of “Yangu Ni Kazi Tu” and the rallying call #DeliveringThePromise.
In Mugumo Estate, the MP presided over the distribution of chicks and piglets to local residents under an economic empowerment programme designed to boost household incomes.
Speaking during the exercise, Waithaka said the initiative is rooted in his long-standing belief in sustainable livelihoods.
“This initiative is very close to my heart. I began supporting such capacity-building programmes many years ago, even before seeking political office, because I strongly believe in creating sustainable income opportunities for our people,” he said.
Residents lauded the programme, noting that poultry and pig farming offer quick returns and a reliable source of income for families grappling with rising living costs.
At HGM Ting’ang’a Primary School, installation of cabro paving blocks is ongoing as part of a broader renovation programme. The works include tiling of all classrooms, construction of a perimeter wall and modern gate to enhance security, and installation of a solar power system to benefit both the primary and secondary sections.
The entire institution is also set for a fresh coat of paint in the coming weeks, giving it a complete transformation.
Waithaka further announced that Ting’ang’a Model School will be the next beneficiary, with renovation works scheduled to begin in April when learners break for holidays.
“These improvements are part of our continued commitment to providing a safe, secure and conducive learning environment for our children,” he said.
Meanwhile, construction of additional classrooms at Kiambu Township Secondary School is also underway. The project is expected to ease congestion, reduce overcrowding and create a more comfortable learning space for students and teachers.
The MP also joined the Jitume ICT Hub Ndumberi team at a career fair organised by PCEA Gituamba in Ting’ang’a, where Form Four candidates received guidance on academic and career pathways.
Institutions present included Kiambu National Polytechnic, Zetech University and Kabete National Polytechnic, among others.
Waithaka said mentorship and exposure are key to unlocking opportunities for young people transitioning from secondary school.
“We remain committed to walking with our youth, providing mentorship and creating platforms that empower them to unlock their full potential,” he said.
Significant progress has also been recorded in road infrastructure projects across the constituency.
Concrete placement and compression works have commenced on the Ngegu–Edenville Road, marking a key milestone in its tarmacking. The MP said proper drainage systems are being prioritised to ensure durability and longevity.
In addition, tarmacking of the Turitu–Riara Catholic Church–Ndumberi Road has officially resumed. The road will extend to Loreto Primary School, improving connectivity in the area. Waithaka said he has instructed the contractor to construct a durable bridge and ensure proper drainage to safeguard the project’s sustainability.
“These projects will enhance connectivity, ease movement and support economic growth in the constituency,” he said.
Under the Mwanga Mashinani programme, installation of streetlights and high mast lighting continues in areas including Kagongo, Gituamba, Riabai, Thathii-ini, Kiamumbi, Indian Bazaar, Kangoya Road, Karambaini Road and Riara.
The project is being implemented through the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC).
During a visit to Kiamumbi, the MP oversaw the installation of solar streetlights along Elizabeth Street and Karura Lane, describing the project as a major boost to security and business activity.
“Well-lit streets help deter crime and create a more conducive environment for businesses and residents,” Waithaka noted.
Residents in the affected areas expressed optimism that improved lighting will extend business hours and enhance safety at night.
The week-long engagements reflect what the MP describes as a comprehensive development strategy focused on economic empowerment, improved education infrastructure, enhanced road networks and strengthened security.
“As long as there is work to be done, we will continue delivering. Penye hatujafika tunakuja,” Waithaka said, reaffirming his commitment to serve.
With multiple projects either underway or in advanced planning stages, Kiambu residents are set to witness continued transformation as the constituency’s development agenda gathers momentum.
