Kiambu Constituency MP Machua Waithaka has disbursed Sh6.2 million in Uwezo Fund cheques to 31 groups comprising women, youth and men, in a move aimed at strengthening grassroots enterprises, creating employment and improving household incomes.

The funds are expected to support group based economic activities and help beneficiaries expand their businesses, invest in income generating ventures and build sustainable livelihoods.

Mr Waithaka presided over the disbursement exercise alongside Kiambu County Director of Youth Affairs John Mwangi, reaffirming the importance of affordable financing in enabling communities to participate in economic development.

The MP said the initiative was part of efforts to empower residents economically by giving them access to financial resources that could help transform their entrepreneurial ideas into viable businesses.

He expressed optimism about the potential of the beneficiaries to use the funds to grow their enterprises, create employment and improve their families’ living standards.

“The testimonials shared by the beneficiaries were inspiring. Their stories demonstrated how people have started groups, built businesses and grown their entrepreneurial ventures through financial support,” Mr Waithaka said.

He added that access to funding could make a significant difference for individuals and groups seeking to establish or expand businesses but facing financial constraints.

The experiences shared by the beneficiaries highlighted the role of group based financing in supporting small scale enterprises, particularly among communities seeking opportunities to improve their economic circumstances.

For many grassroots entrepreneurs, access to capital remains a major hurdle in establishing businesses, purchasing equipment, increasing stock or expanding operations. Financial support through initiatives such as the Uwezo Fund is intended to help eligible groups overcome some of these barriers.

Mr Waithaka said his priority was to support initiatives that promote self reliance, stimulate enterprise development and create opportunities for residents to improve their livelihoods.

The disbursement also brought together representatives of the Women Enterprise Fund, who used the occasion to sensitise the beneficiaries on additional financing opportunities available to them.

The representatives Nasra Yusuf, Kennedy Ogola and Benard Guama explained how the groups could explore the fund’s programmes and apply for financial support to strengthen their businesses.

Their participation provided an opportunity for the beneficiaries to learn about other government backed financing options that could complement their existing resources and support the growth of their enterprises.

The engagement underscored the importance of linking grassroots groups with relevant government agencies to improve awareness of available funding opportunities and enable entrepreneurs to make informed decisions about financing their activities.

By encouraging the groups to explore additional funding avenues, the exercise also highlighted the need for beneficiaries to look beyond a single source of capital as they seek to establish and grow sustainable enterprises.

The Uwezo Fund is a government initiative designed to expand access to finance for women, youth and persons with disabilities, particularly through groups that may face difficulties accessing conventional credit.

Its broader objective is to promote entrepreneurship, support local economic activities and strengthen the capacity of beneficiaries to participate in wealth creation.

However, the long term impact of such financing depends on how effectively beneficiaries manage the funds, invest in viable ventures and sustain their businesses.

The latest disbursement places emphasis on grassroots economic empowerment as part of efforts to expand opportunities for small scale entrepreneurs in Kiambu Constituency.

Mr Waithaka said his commitment remained to supporting programmes that empower residents, promote employment creation and encourage economic independence.

He urged continued collaboration among government agencies, elected leaders and community groups to ensure that available opportunities reach the intended beneficiaries and contribute to lasting improvements in livelihoods.

For the 31 groups that received the cheques, the funding presents an opportunity to strengthen their economic activities, with the ultimate impact expected to be reflected in business growth, improved incomes and increased capacity to support their members.

The success of the initiative will depend on the beneficiaries’ ability to deploy the funds productively and build enterprises capable of sustaining themselves beyond the initial financial support.
