The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Kiambu County branch and the Kikuyu Council of Elders have both extended their condolences over the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, joining other Kenyans in mourning.
Speaking in Kiambu town, through its Vice Chairperson Jimmy Komo and Organizing Secretary Ndiba Kihara, the ODM branch expressed shock over the sudden death of the Party leader. They stated that Raila’s relentless fight for the change of constitution in the country is one thing that will be remembered by the Kenyans who cherished him.
Komo noted that a big gap had been left behind by the passing of Raila, who has been largely referred to as an enigma, and that this void will never be filled by anyone. He further averred that being the jovial person he was, Baba, as he was popularly referred to, would consult widely on the Party’s ongoing activities in the county.
On his part, Ndiba recounted the times Raila visited their home in Githiga, stating: “He even built a house for my brother Peter Yang whom they suffered with in their struggle for multi-party Kenya independence, and that’s how we used to be together.” Ndiba added that the humbleness displayed by Raila could not be understood by anybody who never knew him closely. The Kihara family has all along been associated with the Odinga family due to the close ties they had.

On another occasion, the Kikuyu Council of Elders issued a statement from Kiambu describing Raila as a leader who dedicated his life to justice, democracy, and national unity.
Led by Chairman Wachira Kiago and Council Secretary General James Nene, the elders said Raila often chose reconciliation over conflict and unity over division, qualities that helped shape Kenya’s democracy and inspire many citizens.
Mr. Kiago stated, “I therefore urge our leaders, especially politicians from the Mt. Kenya region, to embrace the servant leadership that was displayed by the Former PM. He always wished well for this country when he was defeated in an election and that is why he joined hands with those who won.”
The council’s Kiambu representative, Kimando Kagwi, added that Raila has been a front-runner in fighting for democracy and his death is a big loss for Kenya as a nation.
The elders sent their condolences to Mama Ida Odinga, the Odinga family, and the Luo community, expressing their loss and saying they stand with them during this difficult and hard time. They also relayed the same condolences on behalf of the silent members of the Kikuyu community.
They further particularly thanked President William Ruto for his show of relentless message of calm and unity during this time, noting that his tone has helped bring the country together. The Elders urged Kenyans to honor Raila Odinga’s legacy by embracing peace, mutual respect, and service to the nation.
