Kiambu Earns National Recognition for Digital Transformation and Revenue Growth

Kiambu County has earned national recognition for its strides in digital governance and economic growth, following its selection as one of the top-performing counties by the Kenya Vision 2030 Secretariat.

Governor Kimani Wamatangi announced the accolade, highlighting the county’s achievements in automation, e-government services, and employment creation—areas increasingly seen as critical drivers of efficient public service delivery and sustainable development.

According to the governor, Kiambu County has undergone a comprehensive digital transformation anchored on a robust Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. The system has automated several core government functions, significantly reducing bureaucratic delays and enhancing transparency.

Key sectors that have benefited from the automation include revenue collection, hospital operations, land administration, development approvals, and fleet management. Residents and businesses can now access services more efficiently, with reduced paperwork and faster turnaround times.

The impact of these reforms is already evident in the county’s financial performance. Governor Wamatangi revealed that Kiambu’s own-source revenue has surged to over KSh 5.4 billion—an increase achieved without imposing additional levies on residents. This growth has been attributed to improved efficiency, reduced leakages, and enhanced accountability brought about by digital systems.

The recognition by the Vision 2030 Secretariat places Kiambu among a select group of counties leading Kenya’s push toward digital governance. The national development blueprint, Kenya Vision 2030, emphasizes innovation and technology as key pillars for transforming the country into a middle-income economy.

County officials say the digital shift has also contributed to job creation, both directly through ICT-related roles and indirectly by improving the business environment and attracting investment.

Governor Wamatangi reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve service delivery and economic opportunities, noting that the transformation journey is ongoing.

The county’s success story is increasingly being viewed as a model for other devolved units seeking to modernize operations and boost revenue without overburdening taxpayers.
