The Kiambu County Government has intensified its drive to improve service delivery and cut operational costs through an expanded solar street lighting programme and the replenishment of medical supplies across all public health facilities.

Governor Kimani Wamatangi announced that under the flagship Angaza Kiambu Programme, the county has already installed more than 12,000 solar-powered streetlights across towns, major roads and rural areas, significantly enhancing security, boosting night-time economic activity and reducing electricity costs.

“Through the Angaza Kiambu programme, we have already installed over 12,000 solar streetlights that now illuminate our towns, streets and roads, even in rural areas,” Governor Wamatangi said. “This initiative has drastically reduced the cost of monthly power bills and maintenance while ensuring our people feel safe and supported.”

The Governor revealed that the county is set to roll out another phase of solar streetlight installation starting next month, with plans to install over 12,000 additional lights within the year, effectively doubling the current coverage.

“Starting next month, we will begin another phase of solar streetlight installation that will see more than 12,000 lights installed this year,” he stated. “Our goal is to ensure every part of Kiambu County benefits from reliable, sustainable and cost-effective lighting.”

At the same time, the County Department of Health Services has launched a countywide replenishment of medical and non-pharmaceutical supplies in all 117 public health facilities, a move aimed at improving access to essential healthcare services.

According to Governor Wamatangi, the supplies being distributed are expected to last at least three months, easing pressure on hospitals and ensuring continuity of care for residents.

“My administration has established a clear policy requiring all our hospitals to maintain at least 85 per cent of the required drug levels at all times,” the Governor said. “We are committed to ending shortages in our health facilities and guaranteeing quality healthcare for every resident of Kiambu.”

The dual interventions in infrastructure and healthcare reflect the county’s broader development agenda focused on efficiency, sustainability and improved living standards. Residents and local leaders have welcomed the initiatives, noting that improved lighting and consistent availability of medicines are critical to economic growth and public welfare.

Governor Wamatangi reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to results-driven leadership, emphasizing that service delivery remains the cornerstone of his tenure.

“This is about work, impact and transforming lives,” he said. “Kazi ndiyo hiyo. Roho ndiyo hiyo.”

The initiatives align with the county’s development slogan #MakingKiambuGreatAgain, reinforcing the administration’s pledge to deliver tangible progress across all sectors.
