Residents of Kanunga, Ngegu, Turitu and neighbouring areas in Kiambu Constituency are set to benefit from improved coordination of national government services following the operationalisation of Kanunga Division, ending years of administrative arrangements that placed them under a different sub county from their political constituency.

The establishment of the division, which comes with its own Assistant County Commissioner (ACC), is expected to bring government administration closer to residents, ease coordination between local administrators and their superiors, and improve access to essential public services.

For years, the residents have been represented politically in Kiambu Constituency but served administratively through Kiambaa Sub County. Chiefs from the affected areas reported to the Deputy County Commissioner in Kiambaa, an arrangement that, according to Kiambu MP Machua Waithaka, created challenges in the coordination and delivery of government services.

The operationalisation of the new division is therefore being viewed as an important step towards aligning administrative structures with the political boundaries and everyday realities of the communities they serve.

Waithaka said the development followed sustained engagement with residents and subsequent efforts to have the boundary mismatch addressed.

In 2023, the MP said he met residents from the affected areas, listened to their concerns and committed himself to pursuing a lasting solution to the administrative challenges they had raised.

He said he had continued to follow up on the matter, pushing for the harmonisation of the boundaries to ensure local administrators could operate within structures that better reflected the needs of the people.

“Today, that effort has borne fruit. Kanunga is now an operational division with its own Assistant County Commissioner,” Waithaka said.

He described the development as a significant milestone for residents who have long sought an administrative arrangement that would make government services more accessible and improve the handling of local issues.

The creation of the division is expected to strengthen the coordination of national government functions at the grassroots, where chiefs and other local administrators play a critical role in communicating government policies, addressing community concerns and facilitating access to public services.

For residents, the importance of the change will ultimately be measured by whether it translates into more efficient administration, quicker responses to local concerns and improved engagement with government officers.

Local administrative offices are often the first point of contact between citizens and the national government, particularly in matters requiring coordination among chiefs, assistant chiefs and senior administrators.

By establishing an Assistant County Commissioner within the new division, the government is expected to provide a more direct administrative link for communities that previously depended on structures based in Kiambaa.

The change could also ease the coordination of security related concerns, public participation activities, government programmes and other administrative functions that require close collaboration between local leaders and national government officials.

However, the full benefits will depend on the effective deployment of personnel, the availability of operational resources and the ability of the new administrative office to respond to residents’ needs.

Waithaka said his involvement in the matter began with listening to residents who had raised concerns about the mismatch between their political representation and administrative arrangements.

The MP’s account highlights the role of public engagement in identifying challenges that may not be immediately apparent in formal boundary arrangements but can have practical consequences for communities.

Although the affected residents fall within Kiambu Constituency for parliamentary representation, their administrative affairs were handled through Kiambaa Sub County.

The resulting arrangement meant that political representation and the chain of national government administration operated through different geographical structures.

The operationalisation of Kanunga Division is intended to address that disconnect and establish a more convenient administrative framework for the affected communities.

For residents of Kanunga, Ngegu and Turitu, the next priority will be ensuring that the new division functions effectively and delivers the improvements that have been anticipated.

The development also underscores the importance of reviewing administrative arrangements as communities grow and residents seek government services that are accessible, responsive and aligned with their local circumstances.

With Kanunga now operating as a division, attention will turn to how the new administrative structure strengthens grassroots governance and improves service delivery across the affected areas.

For Waithaka, the development marks the fulfilment of a commitment he says he made to residents in 2023. For the community, its lasting significance will lie in whether bringing administration closer to home makes government more accessible and responsive to their everyday needs.
