A fresh storm is brewing within the Jubilee Party after former Nyeri Town MP Hon. Ngunjiri Wambugu formally wrote to Party Leader Uhuru Kenyatta seeking urgent clarification on what he terms as “growing confusion and dissatisfaction” among party members and aspirants ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a detailed letter delivered on Tuesday morning and copied to Secretary General Hon. Moitalel Ole Kenta, Wambugu raised concerns over the party’s perceived direction, alleged zoning arrangements with other political formations, and the status of its presidential candidature.

The letter follows recent political events in which Jubilee aspirants were reportedly embarrassed and sidelined by leaders from other parties during public engagements — incidents that have fueled speculation that Jubilee may be ceding political ground in certain regions.

Wambugu questioned whether Jubilee has entered into any formal or informal agreements with other political parties to reserve or allocate specific electoral areas ahead of the 2027 polls.

“It is critical for aspirants and grassroots organizers planning to run for elective positions at ward, constituency or county level to know whether there have been negotiated arrangements with other parties,” he stated.

He warned that without clear communication, aspirants risk investing significant time and resources in regions that may have been “informally ceded” to other formations — a situation he described as potentially damaging to party morale and cohesion.

The former legislator also cited the absence of Jubilee-branded merchandise at recent public functions, arguing that it has created the perception either of financial strain or a deliberate scaling down of the party’s visibility in certain areas.

Transparency, he emphasized, is essential to maintaining trust within the party ranks and preventing internal friction.

The letter also sought definitive clarification regarding Jubilee’s 2027 presidential ticket, particularly the status of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, who recently joined the party.

Wambugu asked whether Dr. Matiang’i is the party’s sole and exclusive presidential candidate and, if so, how that decision was reached.

He further questioned whether Jubilee’s constitution allows other qualified members to contest for the presidential ticket and whether members with reservations about any candidate’s leadership style are permitted to propose alternatives within party rules.

“It is imperative that Jubilee remains a democratic institution guided by its constitution and internal processes,” he wrote, adding that internal debate should not be misconstrued as rebellion but rather viewed as a sign of institutional health.

In response to the mounting concerns, aspirants planning to vie under the Jubilee ticket have constituted the Jubilee Aspirants Forum 2027, with Wambugu serving as Acting Convenor.

According to the letter, the forum will act as a structured platform for coordination, internal lobbying, and preparation for party nominations. It aims to strengthen internal democracy and ensure nomination processes are “fair, transparent and reflective of the will of the membership.”

Wambugu assured fellow aspirants that the matter has now been formally tabled before the party leadership and urged them to remain patient pending an official response.

“This is our party,” he stated, expressing confidence that a solution would be found to safeguard Jubilee’s legacy and institutional strength.

The developments highlight underlying tensions within Jubilee as it seeks to redefine its identity and relevance in the shifting political landscape ahead of 2027. Analysts note that clarity on alliances, zoning arrangements, and the presidential candidature will be critical in determining the party’s cohesion and competitiveness.

Efforts to obtain an immediate response from the office of the Party Leader were unsuccessful by the time of going to press.

With the 2027 General Election drawing closer, attention now turns to whether Uhuru Kenyatta and the party’s National Executive Committee will issue a comprehensive response to quell the unrest and chart a clear path forward for the once-dominant political outfit.
