The rate of accidents involving boda boda motorcycles have reduced in Limuru constituency in Kiambu county.
This has been attributed by continuous road safety campaigns being conducted by the traffic police.
Boda boda rider Isaac Njenga on Thursday said that traffic police have been advising them on how to conduct themselves while on the road.
Njenga noted that, some years ago, so many fatal and minor injury accidents used to be reported.
He said that Limuru has many tarmac roads where they operate from like the Nairobi Nakuru highway, Mutarakwa Ndeiya road, Limuru Rwaka road, Limuru Kiambu road among other county roads which are tarmacked.
“These days traffic police do not necessary have to arrest us. No one runs away when we see them like some years ago” Njenga said.
Area traffic base commander chief inspector Agripina Lugonzo said they come up with a strategy of speaking to boda boda riders at least once in a week so as to sensitise them about traffic rules.
She said they normally visits them at their parking stages, where they speak to them about roads.
“Even if we holds safety campaigns, we sensitise them at least once in a week. We visits at least two parking stages. They asks a lot of questions and discuss with them about the road safety” Lugonzo said.
She reveals that they have extended the sensitisation to all road users, since when they are in a boda boda stage, they invites donkey riders, bicycle riders, pedestrians, nearby private and public service vehicle drivers since they are all road users.
“These days we are involving all road users. We target to hold those sessions where we shall attract as many as possible road users. The traffic rules need to be known by all road users” Lugonzo said.
The traffic police in the area visits all wards in Limuru namely Tigoni Ngecha, Limuru East, Limuru Central, Bibirioni and Ndeiya.
Samuel Maina, Kamirithu boda boda secretary applauded the traffic police for moving an extra mile of enlightening them about road safety, as a way of reducing accidents of all kinds.
“We have lost so many people through accidents that could have been avoided. We are happy since so many of us know issues we didn’t know despite having gone through a driving school” Maina said.
