Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to accelerating development projects worth billions of shillings across the Coastal region, urging residents to rally behind President William Ruto as he seeks a second term in office.

Speaking on Saturday during a resource mobilization forum for small-scale traders in Lunga Lunga Constituency, Kwale County, Prof. Kindiki said the Kenya Kwanza administration is implementing transformative projects aimed at revitalizing the region’s economy and improving livelihoods.

He noted that numerous flagship initiatives are at various stages of completion across coastal counties, with residents expected to reap tangible benefits in the near future.

“We are upgrading roads, expanding electricity connectivity, strengthening the blue economy, constructing affordable housing units, building international-standard stadiums, modern markets, and rolling out empowerment programmes for youth and women,” said the Deputy President.

In Kwale County alone, the government has invested Sh12.8 billion in the construction of tarmac roads, many of which are already complete. The projects have significantly enhanced connectivity and opened up trade corridors in the region.

Completed road networks include those linking A14 Junction, Lunga Lunga, Vanga, Jego, Majoreni, Kanana and Shimoni. Meanwhile, construction is ongoing on the Samburu–Kinango and Kinango–Kwale Town roads.

The Deputy President further highlighted the completion of the Lunga Lunga One Border Stop Post, constructed at a cost of Sh825 million, describing it as a major boost to cross-border trade and regional integration.

Prof. Kindiki underscored the government’s intensified focus on the blue economy, citing the construction of the Shimoni Fish Port at a cost of Sh2.7 billion. The port is now complete and operational, positioning Kwale as a strategic hub for fisheries and maritime trade.

Additionally, Sh652 million has been disbursed to Beach Management Units in the county, alongside the provision of 70 boats to strengthen their operations and enhance fish production.

The government is also establishing a National Marine Research Centre of Excellence in Shimoni at a cost of Sh1.4 billion, as well as a Marine Academy and Centre of Excellence for Port Logistics in Kombani valued at Sh600 million.

To further expand Kenya’s fishing capacity and create employment opportunities, three high-capacity deep-sea fishing vessels have been procured.

Kwale County has received Sh1.4 billion to facilitate electricity connections to 12,800 homes and businesses, a move expected to spur economic growth and improve living standards.

Prof. Kindiki emphasized that the administration’s push for a second term is anchored on sustaining development gains, including improved infrastructure, electricity access, youth empowerment programmes such as NYOTA, women’s economic inclusion, affordable housing and the expansion of the blue economy.

“The call for two terms is about ensuring continuity of development so that projects started are completed and more opportunities created for our people,” he said.

The Deputy President also took a swipe at the opposition, accusing them of lacking a concrete development agenda for the region.

“Our opponents come here without presenting plans on how they will upgrade roads, expand electricity or grow the blue economy. They focus on divisive politics and empty slogans instead of offering solutions,” he said.

Prof. Kindiki reiterated that the government remains committed to inclusive development across all regions, with coastal counties firmly at the centre of its national transformation agenda.
