Construction of a vital section of the Mau Mau road in Lari Constituency has resumed, months after the contractor halted operations.

The contractor, China Wu Yi, has returned to the site to continue tarmacking the stretch connecting Nyambari, Escarpment, Matathia, and Kijabe to the Maai Mahiu road. This section is strategically designed to link the Nairobi-Nakuru highway with the Kamandura-Naivasha road at Maai Mahiu.
Before the work paused, the contractor had already carpeted approximately 10km from Nyambari to Matathia. This progress has already stimulated local trade and allowed Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) to begin operations.

Solomon Njihia, a PSV driver, noted that new routes were established to serve the high volume of residents who previously had to walk to the highway.

“Most people used to walk between 5km and 10km, while others relied on Boda Bodas,” Njihia said. “We now serve travelers from Nyambari to Kijabe and plan to extend to Maai Mahiu once the project is complete.”

Lari MP Mburu Kahangara speaking at Kijabe.

Area Member of Parliament, Mburu Kahangara, emphasized that the road is essential for unlocking the agricultural and business potential of local villages. He noted that the project, commissioned by President William Ruto, has reassured residents of the government’s commitment to development.

”We are feeling the development agenda of President Ruto. These are the returns on our taxes,” the MP said, adding that the road is also attracting tourists using the route as a shortcut from the Maasai Mara back to Nairobi.

For residents of the Lari Kirenga ward, the road has also become a lifeline for healthcare access. “We wait for matatus at Nyambari, Gitithia, or Escarpment to take us to Kijabe Hospital. The route is cheaper, shorter, and scenic,” said resident Mary Nungari.

Addressing locals at the Nyambari trading center, Kahangara urged residents to support the government’s agenda. “Do not listen to those opposing the government. Their goal is to distract you. This administration is working to improve the lives of all Kenyans,” he stated, promising that more roads would be constructed within the constituency to further improve market access.
